We'll go out on a limb and bet that heat and humidity are not a friend of yours — or your hair. And while it would be nice to manifest perfect weather and hair days for the foreseeable future, alas, we haven't figured it out just yet. So we decided to turn to Brendnetta Ashley, stylist at The Salon by InStyle Inside JCPenney, for help. Regardless of how you like to wear your hair, she's here to offer her expert tips on how to navigate frizz during the summertime and beyond.

Keep scrolling for our expert-approved guide on what to do with frizzy hair.

What Is Hair Frizz?

The symptoms of frizzy hair typically include dry, undefined strands with plenty of flyaways. And while you can experience frizz any time of year, many of us are more prone to it during the summer.

"In warmer weather, it is easier [for hair] to become dehydrated," says Ashley. "When curly hair gets overly frizzy it is because it is lacking moisture. Keeping hydrated by drinking water and using moisturizing products can help prevent frizz."

However, washing your hair in extremely hot water, using hot tools too frequently, over-washing, chemical treatments, and friction can all contribute to hair frizz year-round.

How to Prevent Frizz

One word: Hydration. Ashley recommends starting off by getting into the habit of using a hydrating shampoo and conditioner for wash days. Her picks are Urban Hydration's Honey Repairing Shampoo and Conditioner. "It gently cleanses my coils while adding in moisture and controlling the frizz due to the honey and argan oil it contains," she says.

Once you're out of the shower, reach for the brand's Leave-In Conditioning Detangling Spray to lock in moisture and help gently detangle the hair.

How to Reduce Frizz

Thankfully, some styling techniques help to minimize frizz. And if you're a beginner when it comes to haircare, you'll only need to follow three simple steps. "I like to use the LOC method, which is liquid, oil, cream," Ashley explains. "This method is great for retaining moisture." She starts with a styling mousse, then follows it up with ahair oil, and finally, a curl cream (we like Amika Curl Corps).

What Products Should I Use If I Want to Embrace My Frizz?

"You always want to embrace your texture!" Ashley exclaims. "Some natural frizz can create volume and allows you to see the shape of your haircut." When she wants to give her curls a little more oomph, the hair expert uses Matrix Biolage All-In-One Coconut Infusion as a styler.

"It's light but still enough to protect your hair," she explains. "Even if you are embracing your natural frizz, you still need to protect your hair from the summer sun."

What Should I Keep In Mind to Protect My Hair from UV Rays?

As much as UV rays can cause skin damage, they can also wreak havoc on your hair — and they're not only present in the summer. Plus, dryness and color fading can all be side effects of sun exposure, so it's important to keep your hair protected.

Thankfully, all the products Ashley listed offer UV protection, but she also shares another solution for keeping your hair in tip-top shape this summer. "Make a fashion statement by wearing a hat," she suggests. "It's a great way to protect your hair from over-exposure to the sun and it's a great accessory." It's also a great way to cover up any potential hair disasters.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the best hairstyles for dealing with frizz?

There are a variety of hairstyles that can help to combat frizz, from smooth and sleek updos to wet-look styles. If you want to go for a more loose, tousled look, just be sure to use the right hydrating curl-defining products.

  • Will certain haircuts make my hair less frizzy?

Not necessarily, but there are certain haircuts that will help to embrace frizz. Opt for long, strategic layers if you have curly hair since this will lend form to your style vs. one uniform shape.

  • What drying method is best for frizzy hair?

If you decide to blowdry your hair, be sure to use a heat protectant to reduce damage (remember: dry hair will frizz more) and if you have curly hair, use a diffuser. You can also air-dry hair (but be sure to use the right products) or even plop your curls.
