This is What Causes Frizzy Hair (+ How to Prevent It)

If you’ve ever spent more than an hour on your wash-and-style day routine, only to watch your hair poof out like a poodle as soon as you step outside, then you’re well-versed in the frustrations that frizz can cause.

Desperately searching for a solution for fighting the battle against frizz and finally winning? First things first:  In order to combat frizz, you have to start by understanding what causes it.

What causes frizzy hair?

Frizz is primarily caused by an open hair cuticle, which allows environmental moisture (re: humidity) into the cortex of the hair and causes the entire hair shaft to swell. Frizz can also be caused by roughing up the hair shaft, which can happen if you’re not protecting your hair while you sleep, or if you have a habit of over-manipulating your curls. Damaged hair is also a big driver of frizz.

Before and After

What are the best frizz-fighting products?

The best way to prevent frizz is to choose products with moisture-locking ingredients. These ingredients help create a seal around the hair shaft, not only locking the cuticle in place, but also preventing an influx of environmental moisture. Look for ingredients like natural oils or amino acids, which are extremely effective in sealing the hair cuticle and preventing unwanted frizz.

Here’s  your ultimate frizz-prevention routine:

- Start by prepping your hair with a great leave-in conditioner, like our Farewell Frizz Rosarco Milk Leave-in Conditioning Spray which is scientifically proven to decrease frizz for up to 48 hours.

- If air drying, style with the Curl Charisma Rice Amino + Quinoa Frizz Control Gel to enhance wave and curl definition—the rice amino acids and tomato fruit ferment smooth and seal the hair cuticle to lock out frizz-causing environmental moisture and promote consistent curl formation.

- If heat styling, make sure to use the Farewell Frizz Blow Dry Perfection + Heat Protectant Creme to protect your hair up to 450°F.

- Regardless of how you dry, finish your style with a few drops of the Farewell Frizz Rosehip, Argan & Coconut Oil Blend to lock in moisture, diminish frizz, and shield strands from UV and free-radical damage.

How do you prevent frizzy hair?

Using the right products to keep frizz at bay is only half the battle—the other half is reducing the friction that can disrupt the hair cuticle. In order to maintain frizz-free locks, you’ll need to make sure that you’re not unintentionally roughing up your hair in your day-to-day routine.

Here are a few tips to help keep friction—and frizz—to a minimum:

- Swap your terry-cloth towels for microfiber. Regular towels can be harsh on your strands, especially if you’re prone to rough-drying. Try a microfiber hair towel or turban to help cut down on drying time without causing friction.

- Don’t over-manipulate your curls. If you’ve got wavy, curly, or coily hair, you’re already more prone to frizz due to the curve of your hair shaft. When styling, try not to touch or play with your hair too much as it dries, which can cause unwanted frizz.

- Protect your hair while you sleep. Leaving your hair down during the night, especially if you sleep on a cotton pillowcase, can cause tangles, breakage, and can roughen up your hair cuticle. Try switching to a silk pillowcase, tying your hair up in a bun, and/or wearing a silk scarf or a bonnet to bed to protect your strands while you sleep.

Taking care to moisturize, seal, and protect your hair regularly can go a long way in fighting the good fight against unwanted frizz!
