Photography by Erin SamuellSam and Bella Spewack, a husband-and-wifewriting team equally at home on Broadwayand in Hollywood, penned two stage musicals, both of them with Cole Porter, who needs nointroduction. Their first, Leave It to Me!, was ajerry-built piece of satiric nonsense – very 1938– drawn partly upon the Spewacks’ experiencesas foreign correspondents in Moscow. StarringWilliam Gaxton, Sophie Tucker and Victor Mooreas a hapless American ambassador to the SovietUnion, Leave It to Me! is recalled today, if at all,for introducing Mary Martin and her deathlessSiberian striptease in “My Heart Belongs to Daddy.”A decade later, pondering The Taming of theShrew as source material, the Spewacks turnedagain to Porter. Shakespeare was a tough sell totheir composer-lyricist, and to the twenty-sevennervous producers who eventually capitalizedthe musical show-within-a-show now revered theworld over as Kiss Me, Kate. Musicals had changedirrevocably in the ten years since Leave It to Me!Bella Spewack, a tough cookie by all accounts, refers more than once to the “New Art Form” in herintroduction to the published text of Kiss Me, Kate, and although her tongue is planted firmly in hercheek, a little “musical play” by Richard Rodgersand Oscar Hammerstein called Oklahoma! hadpermanently raised the bar in 1943 for how theAmerican musical could and would operate. When considering the spectacular triumph ofOklahoma!, Richard Rodgers puts it best: “Theorchestrations sounded the way the costumeslooked.” The serious intentions behind Rodgersand Hammerstein’s new “integrated” style meant, among other things, that songs reveal character;that songs aren’t interchangeable from show toshow or character to character; and that songs anddances ideally move the plot forward. This beingAmerica, however, these innovations wouldn’t havetaken permanent root if Oklahoma! hadn’t run fiveyears, toured for ten and thrown off millions ofdollars. Over time the profit motive will advancethe New Art Form as much as the dream ballet.Rodgers and Hammerstein followed up withCarousel, Allegro and South Pacific, and othertalents, both established and new, followed suitwith shows like Bloomer Girl, On the Town, StreetScene, Finian’s Rainbow, Brigadoon, Regina and –most to the point here – Irving Berlin’s 1946 smashAnnie Get Your Gun, the musical that domesticatedEthel Merman, who had been Porter’s go-to sirenthrough the thirties and early forties, by giving her a2

eal character with a dramatic arc to play and sing. The overwhelming success in the forties ofthe musical play meant that the musical comedywould have to start behaving too. Pre-Oklahoma!,a producer or composer or librettist might get anidea for a show, hire a clutch of headliners andwrite to their particular comic talents, filling outwoolly storylines with topical gags, toothsomechorines and take-home tunes. It had workedtime and again for the Gershwins, for Rodgersand Hart, for Berlin and for Porter – Leave It toMe! being a prime example. When the Spewacksapproached him with Shrew, Porter, the ne plusultra in Gotham swank, was considered washedup. Although his four wartime musicals (PanamaHattie, Let’s Face It!, Something for the Boys andMexican Hayride) hadn’t lost money, they wereforgettable, undisciplined, old-school vehicles withmediocre scores. Then, his Seven Lively Arts andAround the World in Eighty Days were outrightflops. In Annie Get Your Gun, Berlin and Mermanhad risen to the challenge of the New Art Form.Could Porter, famously uninvolved in the day-todaycreation of his shows-in-vitro (unthinkabletoday), step up to the plate and collaborate ona semi-Elizabethan backstage musical withoutstars? Especially when, as Bella Spewackclaims, he couldn’t make heads or tails of theShakespeare even after it was read aloud to him?And how. Porter wrote and – new for him – rewrotehis score for Kiss Me, Kate in three months;seven songs were either deleted during rehearsalsor never used. Whether the feuding, divorcedfor-a-yearFred Graham and Lilli Vanessi, thebackstage counterparts of Petruchio and Kate, were based on the legendary egos of AlfredLunt and Lynne Fontanne or on the combativeSpewacks, their serio-comic battle of the sexeswas tailor-made for Porter’s melodic genius andthe insouciant ribaldry of his lyrics. Three songs, including Kate’s capitulation, “I Am AshamedThat Women Are So Simple,” are direct fromShakespeare (via the Spewacks). The Italian settinginspires a tarantella, “We Open in Venice,” and amost felicitous bawdry for Petruchio in “Where Isthe Life that Late I Led?” And a steamy backstageintermission at the Ford’s Theatre in Baltimoreprovokes the cool jazz of “Too Darn Hot.”Kiss Me, Kate opened on December 30, 1948,to rapturous reviews and ran until July of 1951.America loves nothing more than a comeback, and3

this was Porter’s. Writing for specific charactersin a developing story led him to his finest score, one as chockablock with standards as Berlin’sfor Annie Get Your Gun. It landed him on thecover of Time magazine in January of 1949, andalthough his final trio of musical comedies (Outof This World, Can-Can and Silk Stockings) didn’tmatch his undisputed masterpiece, Porter, whosesongs had first graced a Broadway stage in 1916,was given a fresh start in the New Art Form. And yet . . . what about First Man and SecondMan, those gangsters shoehorned into theplot as if it were still 1923 and Oklahoma! hadnever happened? The Spewacks had initiallypromised Porter that this pair of vaudevilleclowns weren’t going to sing – but then therules of showbiz intervened: how about acomedy number playing on the Bard’s titles?Let it be said, in conclusion, that Rodgers andHammerstein didn’t eschew entertainment for itsown sake. While their talents certainly elevatedand extended the dramatic range of a popularform and set benchmarks for posterity, many, many strains of musical theatre co-exist everyseason on Broadway (even in 2010, when for everyNext to Normal there are two Rock of Ages). Themusical comedy has traditionally been a moreelastic beast, so if your evening’s entertainmenthas already included “Wunderbar,” “So In Love,”“Why Can’t You Behave?,” “Were Thine ThatSpecial Face?,” “Tom, Dick or Harry,” “Too DarnHot” and “Always True to You in My Fashion,” thenthere is no reason in the world why First Man andSecond Man can’t come down to the footlightsjust before the finale and kill the audience with“Brush Up Your Shakespeare.” Because if theirlaughs have been raining down all night, and theireleven o’clock number has lyrics on the order ofJust recite an occasional SonnetAnd your lap will have “Honey” upon it,When your baby is pleading for pleasureLet her sample your “Measure for Measure”then this pair of deliriously unintegrated, all-licens’dfools can misbehave to their heart’s content –and ours.James Magruder, dramaturge for A FunnyThing Happened on the Way to the Forumlast season, teaches at SwarthmoreCollege and the Yale School of Drama.4
