The tracks were cut in the early sixties during Chet’s long period spentin Europe and feature the brilliant playing of altoist Jacques Peltzer, pianist Amadeo Tommasi, bassist LarryRidley and others. Donna Hightower is just that, asinger who delivers perfectly the first time she steps to the mike. In these late Fifties sides she demonstratedthe phrasing, taste and skill which marked her as one the brightest new vocalist stars of the time. He was a true successor of Freddie Webster, Fats Navarro and Clifford Brown. In 1948 he joined theground-breaking Dizzy Gillespie band and, as a member, paid his first visit to Sweden shortly after. Hejoined Lionel Hampton’s orchestra one year later and stayed for five. In 1954 he went back to Europe, thistime as a member of the Freddy Mitchell band, but left after a few chaotic months in Italy and returned toSweden to play with Seymor Osterwall’s band. He remained in Sweden, where he became one of the mostin-demand jazz soloists, and appeared on several record dates as leader and sideman, all before leaving tojoin the Quincy Jones band for its European 1959-60 winter tour. Quincy, who wrote the song ‘Meet BennyBailey’ and admired him for his marvelous breath control and remarkable range, said Bailey’s technique was‘most perfect’. This is Sonny Stitt’s album, and it shows. He is a master in full flight, communicating directly anddeeply. Even when his style was closer to Charlie Parker’s, he always had a style of his own, driven by great melodic imagination and a technicalflexibility unequaled among his peers. Roy Eldridge, one of the undeniable greats in the history of jazztrumpet, plays explosively here, delivering well-constructed solos. The rhythm section, with Oscar Peterson,Ray Brown, Herb Ellis and Stan Levey, is superb. Peterson is at his best - his comping is sensitive, strong andvaried, and his solos full of drive. Stitt, Roy and Oscar got a fantastic scene going that resulted in one of themost exciting jazz sessions ever recorded. Interestingly, these two sets were not, in fact, recorded as indicated in their originalLP releases. The first was issued as ‘The Oscar Peterson Trio Live At the Concertgebouw’ - the famous concerthall in Amsterdam - but was recorded at the Opera House in Chicago. The second comes from a concert atthe Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and not - as it was originally claimed - at the Opera House in Chicago.Details about the location aside, the quality of the music is undeniable, and the new mastering offers the bestsound available today - the sound that Peterson-Ellis-Brown made so familiar and exciting. The rapport between the three men is outstanding, theswing devastating and the results fantastic. In Lee KonitzMeets Jimmy Giuffre, Jimmy contributed as soloist and arranger of a five-piece saxophone section. Thethoughtful, contrapuntal writing creates a delicate mood, where everybody gets a chance to blow, and theengaging work of Konitz, Bill Evans, and Warne Marsh provides extremely rewarding moments. On You andLee, Jimmy employed only a brass section and rhythm to back the altoist. He chose to keep the brass tightlymuted, working always as a section, with no individual solos. In all, these sessions are a skillful, fascinatingmixture of tonal beauty and emotional improvising. It has ensemble drive, and its charts are vital jazz statements whichdemand the best of soloists. Joe Newman, Frank Wess, Frank Foster, and Benny Powell’s playing is inspiredand meaningful, while Joe Williams’ singing is vibrantly effective. The rhythm section, with the great FreddieGreen, Eddie Jones and Sonny Payne is the ultimate basic of the band, and, of course, the key man here isThe Count himself. All musicians at the top of their games, the crowd is fanatically enthusiastic and the bandreturns their enthusiasm in full. Here is Basie’s band at its best! Recorded at the same time as the “April In Paris” sessions, this one truly deserves to be rediscovered. There is no explanationfor this album’s seemingly lack of recognition; it is every bit as good as the other. There is plentyof substantial moments on these sides. The opening, Inside Out, is a long slow blues, with Marshall Royalplaying some great, funky and warm clarinet choruses. Joe Newman’s perennial muted trumpet shines inLow Life. Frank Foster plays pretty in his own original Lady in Lace. The modern language of Thad Jones andFrank Wess is at its best on Move… and that Just to mention a few highlights. This is a must for any fan ofthe Count. Timeless. In a revealinginsight, Nat Hentoff considered that “Brookmeyer has opened himself to jazz of all eras. He has absorbed, tested, and selected from the whole reservoir of autobiographies in sound that is the jazz language, thoseelements he felt relevant to his own experience in living and telling his history of jazz. He has not limitedhimself to any one era, school or attitude, preferring to filter all of jazz through his emotions rather thanremain a parochial hipster.” [Item Code: 65013 CD: $17.00]1638 ROY ELDRIDGE DIZZY GILLESPIE TOUR DE FORCE Steeplechase (Solos Order: Peterson, Eldridge,Gillespie, Edison) • Ballad Medley: I’m Through With Love (Soloist: Roy Eldridge) - The Nearness OfYou (Soloist: Dizzy Gillespie) - Moonlight In Vermont (Soloist: Roy Eldridge) - Summertime (Soloist: DizzyGillespie) • Tour De Force (Solos Order: Edison, Eldridge, Gillespie, Peterson) (Personnel: Dizzy Gillespie,Harry “Sweets” Edison, Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, Buddy Rich) [1955] During the JATP‘golden’ period, 1944-1958, a lot of albums were recorded, live or in the studios. Strangely enough, thisstudio session, which remains one of the best ever made in that context, has never been reissued on CD.The blowing is superb, and every trumpeter is not competing each together but conversing each together, which is very rare and important to emphasize. We know that neither Dizzy nor ‘Sweets’ were ever eager ofthese kinds of settings (battles of the horns). In this reunion, Roy plays more naturally and he’s more relaxed that he used to be, which it gives us amuch better good idea of what he really could do - very well - at that time. Three major soloists in full top form backed by a firm swinging rhythmsection. Encore appearance in catalog. The usual big band section, as featured in group one, gets a finesound and offers Al Cohn and Gene Quill a framework for some excellent soloing. John Williams is heardfrom, too, with his solidly swinging piano style. The second grouping, with a woodwind instrumentationlends a different coloration to the section. Peanuts Hucko is featured on clarinet, Phil Bodner plays goodflute, and Boomie Richman sounds great on bass clarinet. The third set has three tenors and a baritone. A“Four Brothers” sound with Al and Zoot soloing and Hank Jones playing really lovely piano—tasty, clean, and swinging—behind them and on his own solos. As an experiment in the various shapes a sax section canbe drawn in, this was a very successful project. Through his love of jazz Tommy Dorsey introduced the concept of the what was to be the first ‘bandwithin-a-band’using members of his own orchestra to form a small group to continue his astute mix of sweetand swing. From the lively introduction of ‘The Music Goes ‘Round and Around’ we’re off and swinging, and with great musicians throughout this fantastic 2-CD set including Sterling Bose, Bud Freeman and ofcourse Dorsey himself you won’t be able to switch this off until the group play their last note. Amongst allthe fine solo’s to be heard in this collection, it is impossible to forget the superb trombone of Tommy Dorseyjust listen to the solos on ‘Sailing At Midnight’, ‘My Own’, ‘You’re As Pretty As A Picture’ and ‘Thanks ForEverything’ if any proof be needed. Marty Elkins is a force to be reckoned with as she weaves her wayin and out of up tempo songs, ballads, and swing tunes. Marty is equally comfortable with a swinging sevenpiece band as she is with an intimate duo. HoagyCarmichael’s ‘New Orleans’ starts in a clever, modernized two-step folded into a blues frame, ‘Why Did IChoose You?’ is both romantic and quizzical, and the incredible pretty and dark melody of Don Grolnick’s‘The Cost of Living’ is as stunningly emotional a tango inferred piece as has ever been written. Haden’s‘Chickoree’ is bouncier in midtempo pace, still low key, with Hobgood’s stride flavorings. The tracks withthe wistful Elling include Haden’s famous reflective ballad ‘First Song,’ including the poignant lyric abouta ‘song that lightened up the world, when love was new.’ ‘Stairway to the Stars’ showcases the vocalistsspontaneous quality in elongating phrases, while the Billy Strayhorn - penned waltz ‘Daydream’ has Elling ina deep, midnight blue mood. An excellent recording from start to finish, played with extraordinary intimacy, heart and soul. Willie Perryman went by two nicknames during his lengthy career. He was known as Piano Redbecause of his albino skin pigmentation for most of his performing life. But they called him Dr Feelgood duringthe 60s, and that’s precisely what his raucous, barrelhouse-styled vocals and piano were guaranteed to do: cure anyone’s ills and make themfeel good. This is the first time they havebeen heard since the 60s. The groups on this album, in contrast to most of those on the previous At The Jazz Band Ball releases, were not playingmusic that could be readily classified as ‘trad’. In fact, they all took a path that hardly led to commercial successalthough it allowed them to achieve artistic satisfaction. But before all this, as his comedic ideas and talentwere blossoming, Close cut these two fantastic spoken word albums, one for Mercury (Hip, recorded with John Brent in 1958) and the other forthe little known Hanover label. Very much both of their time and timeless, these brilliant discs both satirized and cashed in on the How To. This collection has multiple purposes, the most important of which is, of course, entertainment. Here are 101 prime examples of (mainly) late 40s Jump, Jive and Boogie, many on CD for the first time. Most of the pianists were inspired by thelate 30s explosion of Boogie Woogie and the influence of artists like Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson. The vocals in the maintake their lead from the phenomenal popularity of Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five. The recordings of the Liggins brothers, Joe and Jimmy, RoyMilton and Calvin Boze, none new to CD, are the most commercially successful of the small band recordings that flooded the juke box market inJordan’s wake. All of the artists here were based in California and all strived for that jukebox hit to emulate Jordan despite most of his output havingbeen recorded in New York. This collection continuesfrom our last Flatt & Scruggs•Stanley collection (JSP 7724). In the period covered here, bothBluegrass and Country Music were under threat, first from R&B and then from the first wave of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Only the best would survive - and itis a testament to both groups featured here that they flourished. It’s still the same story.
