“I never sing for audiences; I sing for people.” 

– Jacques Brel 

Born in Brussels in 1929, Jacques Brel declined the 

comfortable future awaiting him in the successful 

family business. Brel instead pursued his deep 

interest in music and literature by writing and 

singing his own chansons (lyric-driven French 

songs). Those songs carried him to the fertile 

artistic and creative sphere of Paris in 1952, where 

he continued to develop them for presentation to 

Parisian publishers and nightclub patrons. 

Brel regarded songwriting as a craft, one that 

he once depicted in mime as a carpenter at work 

with a saw and plane, claiming, “There is nothing 

more exacting than to put a note of music above 

a word.” The balance of passion and reason, and 

the expression of truth, compassion and respect for 

ordinary people became the hallmarks of his work. 

Brel’s songs illuminated his own dreams and fears 

in a world impacted by the Great Depression and 

World War II (and later the Algerian War and the 

radical 1960s). Brel’s songs reflected life’s spinning 

carousel of family, love, politics, social injustice and 

a pervading desire to maintain or at least reclaim 

one’s sense of humanity. 

A mesmerizing performer of great physical and 

emotional intensity, Brel personified the characters 

of his songs, often building to a defiant and 

explosive conclusion with what came to be known 

as the “Brelian crescendo.” He was a favoured 

performer of the Parisian sophisticates, yet his 

desire to explore and enhance the popular song 

took him on tour throughout France for ten years. 

Brel sang in bars, converted cinemas, barns and 

churches, all the while aware that no matter the 

complexity of his song structures, the feelings they 

conveyed were of utmost visceral simplicity. 

Brel’s strenuous touring next carried him beyond 

France to include the United States, Canada, Great 

Britain, South Africa, Finland, Sweden and Russia. 

On the world stage, he brought the poetry-set-tomusic 

of the “art song” back to mainstream cultural 

life, much as the nineteenth-century composers 

of German lieder had done. Brel transformed 

and elevated the popular song into an art form of 

universal relevance. 

Nat Shapiro, a music-publishing associate, 

was among the innumerable New York listeners 

captivated by Brel. In 1960, Shapiro introduced 

the wonders of Brel’s musical world to his friend, 

Eric Blau, a writer-producer-translator with a 

background in the classics and 1930s left-wing 

literature. Blau then wrote and co-produced an off- 

Broadway revue entitled O, Oysters! at the Village 

Gate in Greenwich Village. In the revue, Blau’s wife,

Elly Stone, became the first performer to sing Brel’s 

songs in English translation. She assisted Blau with 

the translation and introduced Brel’s “Don’t Leave 

Me” (“Ne me quitte pas”) and “Carousel” (“La Valse 

à mille temps”). 

Shapiro propitiously encouraged Blau to join 

with Mort Shuman, a pioneer rock composer, to 

develop a show using the songs of Brel. Shuman 

was very familiar with both Brel and his music. 

The Blau-Shuman collaboration took hold. They 

began to sift through some one hundred and fifty 

of Brel’s songs, finally arriving at the selected 

twenty-five that would form the Brel project: 

their “beautiful bag of songs.” For Blau and 

Shuman, “Putting the songs into English was an 

act of artistic importance; putting the songs into 

English so that they still sang with Brel’s voice 

was an act of artistic integrity.” The collaborators 

were determined to achieve that integrity. If a 

theatre piece did not result, at least several new 

Brel songs would be introduced in America. 

The collaborators had plenty of content but 

little to no form for a good deal of the show’s 

preparation period. Some comfort was provided by 

Shapiro’s creation of the title of the show. Although 


was not favourably regarded at the outset, it 

became a beacon. Blau recalled: “It almost made us 

believe we had a show.” 

While on a flight to London, his first in more 

than twenty years, Blau experienced an epiphany 

that established both the form and the choice of 

director for Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and 

Living in Paris. Blau recollected: 

The coolness of memory and distance merged 

with the cry and passion of Brel. . . . . Clarities 

and depths of lights. Darknesses never totally 

black. Weighted, flowing movement of players. 

. . . Floating; floating. Suddenly descending; 

rising again. . . . A mobile in which the text was 

the songs. The subtext everything else. And the 

words of Brel culled from unused songs and 

interviews as a fleeting run of lines to break 

tensions. 

Moni Yakim, an Israeli mime who had performed 

in Marcel Marceau’s troupe, was selected to 

impart this essence as director. Shuman, Stone, 

Shawn Elliott and Alice Whitfield were cast as the 

performers. Blau’s company, 3W Productions, would

produce the show. The ensemble components 

settled into place, and the Village Gate became the 

rehearsal and performance site. 

The collaborators’ main goal was the organization 

of the songs and their interpretation so as to create 

a theatre experience, not a concert or variety 

performance. Blau elaborated: “To reveal our 

characters, who in one way or another represented 

the feelings and ideas of Brel and, in part, Brel 

himself, as people who were caught in the dark 

human comedy and who were unwilling, in spite 

of all they had experienced, to abandon either 

the joy or hope that makes life bearable.” Through 

experimentation, the ensemble reached that goal. 

The result was a “librettoless musical,” neither 

revue nor musical comedy, in which song text 

replaced spoken text. Within each song, Brel had 

provided scenes and mini-dramas that were best 

served by the “librettoless” form. 

The show opened on January 22, 1968, to a 

mixed critical response but an overwhelming 

audience “word of mouth.” The show was 

indeed alive and well. An inspired New York 

theatre community attended repeatedly. 

Synagogues, churches and peace marchers 

began to use the songs for their own purposes. 

In 1969, Brel himself attended and exclaimed 

to Blau: “You have really done it. You have 

separated me from the work. The songs have 

a life of their own. I really enjoyed them.” 

The songs continued to live throughout the 

almost five-year run of the original Jacques Brel 

Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, the 1975 film 

version, innumerable subsequent productions 

worldwide and individual performers’ arrangements 

and recordings. 

Blau believed that Brel “sings to us through 

his light and darkness without ever blinking or 

dropping a sentimental tear for some future time 

when mankind will have inherited the earth.” And 


tellingly concludes: 

Then with nothing at all 

But the little we are 

We’ll have conquered all time 

All space, the sun, and the stars.

Jacques Brel 

Music 

Jacques Romain Georges Brel was born in 

Brussels, Belgium, on April 8, 1929. After a brief 

stint working in his father’s cardboard factory, he 

began to pursue a career as a singer-songwriter. In 

1950 he married Thérèse Michielsen, with whom he 

would have three daughters, but by the 1960s the 

couple were living apart. 

After making his first two-song recording in 1953, 

Brel moved to Paris, where he began performing 

his own songs on the cabaret and music-hall circuit. 

He recorded his debut album in 1955; his second 

album, two years later, contained the hit single 

“Quand on a l’amour,” for which he won the Grand 

Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros. Over the course of 

the next decade, Brel became an international star, 

but in 1967 he abandoned his career as a concert 

performer in favour of theatre and film. 

In 1968 he starred in the French version of Man 

of la Mancha, which he himself translated and 

directed. His film work included roles in Mon oncle 

Benjamin (1969), L’aventure, c’est l’aventure (1972) 

and the unsuccessful Le Far-West (1973), which he 

also directed. 

By 1974, Brel was suffering from advanced lung 

cancer. After an operation in Brussels, he decided 

to move with his new partner, Madly Bamy, to the 

Marquesan island of Hiva Oa, in French Polynesia. 

He returned to Paris in 1977 to record his final 

album, Les Marquises, and died there on October 

9, 1978. He was buried in Atuona, on Hiva Oa, in the 

same cemetery as the painter Paul Gauguin. 

Eric Blau 

Production conception, English lyrics 

and additional material 

Milton Eric Blau was born in Bridgeport, 

Connecticut, on June 1, 1921, the son of Hungarian 

immigrants. After leaving the City College of New 

York without graduating, he served with the U.S. 

Army Signal Corps during the Second World 

War. While in Europe, he had some of his poems 

published in French. 

After the war he founded and edited Masses 

and Mainstream, a literary journal dedicated to 

Communist principles, and worked as a freelance 

writer, ghostwriter and publicist. With cartoonist 

Roy Doty he created The Adventures of Danny 

Dee, an animated children’s television show that 

first aired in 1953. 

Blau and his wife, Elly Stone, were introduced to 

the music of Jacques Brel by Nat Shapiro, a friend 

who worked for a record company; Elly was so 

enchanted she asked her husband to translate the 

French lyrics into English. Some of those English 

versions appeared in the musical revue O, Oysters!, 

after which Blau and Mort Shuman set about 

translating more songs to create Jacques Brel Is 

Alive and Well and Living in Paris. Elly Stone was a 

member of the original off-Broadway cast. 

Blau subsequently published novels, non-fiction 

books and one collection of poetry, and produced 

some small off-Broadway musicals, though none 

were as successful as Jacques Brel. He died of 

pneumonia in New York on February 17, 2009. 

Mort Shuman 

Production conception, English lyrics 

and additional material 

Mortimer Shuman was born in Brooklyn on 

November 12, 1936, the son of Polish immigrants. 

As a teenager, he formed a close friendship with 

singer-songwriter Doc Pomus, who became his 

mentor and writing partner. Together, Shuman and 

Pomus created hit singles for such artists as Elvis 

Presley, Ray Charles, Andy Williams and the Drifters, 

including “Viva Las Vegas,” “Turn Me Loose,” “Can’t 

Get Used to Losing You,” “A Teenager in Love” and 

“Save the Last Dance for Me.” 

In the mid-1960s Shuman left New York for an 

extended period of travel. In Paris he discovered 

the music of Jacques Brel; returning to New York, 

he teamed up with Eric Blau to create Jacques Brel 

Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. Shuman was 

also one of the four cast members of the original 

off-Broadway production, which opened in 1968. 

After Jacques Brel Shuman returned to Paris, 

where he spent 15 years writing and recording 

songs and composing film scores. He then moved 

to London with his wife, Maria-Pia, and their three 

daughters, to continue his work in English. He died 

in London on November 3, 1991.

Songs of Self-Expression 

On January 25, 1972, Jacques Brel attended a gala 

at Carnegie Hall entitled “Hommage à Jacques.” 

The evening of song celebrated the man, his 

compositions and his contributions to the world 

of music. It was an iconic moment for this singersongwriter 

whose catalogue of songs had brought 

him a devoted following around the world and 

made him a leading influence on some of the 

most progressive English-speaking performers of 

the day, including David Bowie, Nina Simone and 

Leonard Cohen. 

But the story of Jacques Brel began far from 

New York City – 5,800 kilometres away across the 

Atlantic in Brussels, where he was born in 1929 on 

the eve of the Great Depression. After enduring 

a childhood stained by wartime occupation, Brel 

achieved minor success on the cabaret circuit in 

Brussels. His first recording, at age twenty-three, 

was followed by the French release of his self-titled 

debut album in 1955. 

By the early 1960s, Brel had established himself 

as one of France’s greatest writers and interpreters 

of modern songs. He lived through both the 

Second World War and the Vietnam War, which 

illuminates why many of the central themes in his 

songs address the survival instinct that burns in 

all of us. Part art song, part protest, much of Brel’s 

work describes love and madness, life and death; 

songs that compel an audience to listen and 

journey with him through the stories he created 

and told. But Brel’s compositions were not written 

as theatre songs (which generally forward the 

story or illuminate character); they were created as 

“stand-alone” pieces by a man whose views on life 

needed to be expressed through performance and 

song. As Brel himself said, “It was to spit out my 

dream to the outside world.” 


is a song cycle of more than twenty-five works by 

Brel, translated by Mort Shuman and Eric Blau. As 

a musical, it is an anomaly: it has no libretto, no 

storyline and no recognizable cast of characters. 

Yet the power of Brel’s music, lyrics and passion is 

the foundation of a show that has been performed 

around the world – almost in perpetuity since its 

off-Broadway debut in the late sixties. 

This production is in many ways a “première,” 

since the musical has been re-explored for 

the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. In addition 

to many of the songs featured in the original 

1968 production, we have included some rare 

gems from two of Brel’s albums, recorded in 

1959 and 1961, and a treasure from the 1975 

film of the musical. The score also has brandnew 

orchestrations lovingly created by the 

Festival’s Director of Music, Rick Fox, which 

breathe new life into these timeless songs. 

Near the end of his life, Brel wondered if people 

ever really understood his music. The answer 

to that is simple: eighty-one years after his birth 

and thirty-one years after his passing, Brel’s 

philosophies and the life force within his songs are 

being performed, “alive and well and living,” on the 

Tom Patterson stage in Stratford, Ontario.

Thirty-one members of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival’s 2010 company have come out of our 

professional training program, now known as the Birmingham Conservatory for Classical Theatre. 

Founded in 1998, the Conservatory has helped to launch the careers of some of our leading young 

actors, many of whom we have had the great pleasure of directing. Providing opportunities for young 

Canadian artists is part of our mission at the Festival, and we hope you will find it as satisfying as we
