Dear Parents,<br />

On behalf of the children and staff at <strong>Daves</strong> <strong>Avenue</strong>, I would like to thank Julie Schaper, Jill Hourani,<br />

and Fanya Hull along with all the members of the Under the Big Top Committee for the wonderful event on<br />

Saturday night. !Every aspect of the evening was perfect as a result of their hard work! !!I would also like to<br />

thank each and every parent who attended and/or donated. You showed that you support the education of<br />

<strong>Daves</strong> <strong>Avenue</strong> children, and that you value a strong sense of community for our school. !Thank you for making<br />

the event such a success and for helping to ensure the year ahead will be a positive experience for your children. !<br />

Last week, we had our first annual Bike Rodeo. Thank you to Jennifer Page for coordinating the day for<br />

our fourth and fifth grade students. !!Members of the Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police<br />

Department and the staff from the Traffic Safe Network worked with the students to teach safe<br />

cycling practices. Helmets were checked and adjusted to ensure the safest fit before the students had the<br />

opportunity to practice safe biking habits. Even our students who were pedestrians that day learned from this<br />

event and were given the opportunity to practice the skills on foot. !!Kudos to parents who have encouraged your<br />

children to walk, ride, or scoot to school since the event took place. !On Friday, we had a record breaking number<br />

of bikes parked on campus. !Bravo! !<strong>The</strong> kids are developing healthy habits while reducing their carbon<br />

footprint.!<br />

We are looking forward to the annual Open House on April 12th. !Please mark your calendars and<br />

plan to attend the evening with your children from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. !Your child will be sharing what he/<br />

she is learning this year. !All family members are welcome to come and share the event with your children.<br />

Please note that April 12th is a Minimum Day to allow the teachers to prepare for the evening.<br />

An urgent Safety Message<br />

from the principal<br />

It has been brought to my attention that parents are using the Clubhouse Parking<br />

lot for drop off and pick up. !This area is to be used for Clubhouse drop off and<br />

pick up only. It is not designed as a drop off area for the rest of the school. !<strong>The</strong><br />

exit is complicated by the students who are traveling into the school on the<br />

appropriate sidewalk that avoids the drop off lanes on the Poppy side of campus.<br />

<strong>The</strong> drivers using the Clubhouse lot are posing a<br />

significant hazard to the children who are walking and<br />

cycling in this area because the drivers are not yielding properly to those<br />

on cycles, scooters, in other vehicles, or who walk down the sidewalk. !Please use<br />

the appropriate drop off and pick up lanes if you are transporting your children to<br />

school. !Better yet, please encourage your children to walk, ride, or scoot to school<br />

each day.<br />

to determine whether or not to send<br />

your child to school.! <strong>The</strong> following are<br />

some guidelines.! Keep your child<br />

home if he or she has:<br />

!!! *!!! Fever of 99.4 or more<br />

!!! *!!! Chills<br />

!!! *!!! Vomiting, diarrhea or stomach cramps within the past 24 hours<br />

!!! *!!! Nausea<br />

!!! *!!! Sore throat or difficulty swallowing<br />

!!! *!!! Rash<br />

!!! *!!! Unusually red, watery, itchy or burning eyes<br />

To help control the spread of colds, flu and other contagious illnesses,<br />

keep your child home if he or she is generally not feeling well or is<br />

unable to actively participate in school activities.<br />

Children must be symptom free, without<br />

medication, for 24 hours before returning to school.<br />

Can Run<br />

Price Increases on April 16th to $35!!<br />

Take advantage of the early registration price of $30 by signing up by April 15th for the 9th Annual Girls on the Run of<br />

Silicon Valley 5k event! <strong>The</strong> price increases to $35 starting April 16th.!Anyone can join in the fun - you do not need to be<br />

enrolled in the Girls on the Run program to walk or run with us!<br />

Vasona Park, Los Gatos<br />

<strong>The</strong> 5k run/walk is open to anyone in the community. This is not just an event for girls, but for everyone! Friends, family<br />

(including brothers and dads), GOTR alumni, your co-workers -- anyone can sign up. <strong>The</strong> event will not be timed, but there will be a clock at the end for those people<br />

who are interested.<br />

• Mardi Gras beads at mile markers!<br />

• Finisher ribbons!<br />

• Raffle with fun prizes!<br />

• Hobee's coffee cake and other goodies at the finish line!<br />

Safety Patrol Parent Sponsor Needed<br />

Think community service is a great asset for kids?! Want to get to know the kids<br />

your child will go to middle school with?! Have ideas about how to keep <strong>Daves</strong><br />

Ave a safe place at morning drop off or afternoon pick-up?!<br />

For just 20 minutes a day, you do all these things and more by being a parent<br />

safety patrol sponsor!! If you already drop your child off at school in the<br />

morning or pick up after school, all you need to do is park in the front lot and<br />

spend a few extra minutes to be there for the fifth grade volunteers as they<br />

learn to take a larger role in their school community as safety patrols.!<br />

DON’T FORGET!!<br />

THURSDAY, APRIL 12th IS A MINIMUM DAY<br />

to allow teachers to prepare for the Open House.<br />

We look forward to seeing your families at 6:30<br />

that evening!<br />

No formal training is required – all you need is your enthusiasm as you work<br />

with a group of motivated kids to develop their leadership skills.!! If your own<br />

kids are in primary grades this year, it's a great way introduce them to<br />

community service and at the same time allow them to get to know some older<br />

student leaders at their school.!<br />

My daughter is going off to Fisher next year already knowing many 7 th and 8 th<br />

graders she met through the safety patrol program at <strong>Daves</strong> who will be happy<br />

to help her as she gets used to her new school.!<br />
