Y's 1972 – A MOMENT IN Y's WITH MAX VADUKUL

Y's 1972 – A MOMENT IN Y's WITH MAX VADUKUL

A unique style──Launched in 1972 by Yohji Yamamoto as his first brand, Y's is his very philosophy in clothing-making. Always going forward, an expression of an identity that never changes. In 2022, through further creativity, Y's look back upon 50 years of its history.

A capsule collection made from the re-composed “moments,” grabbed throughout 50 years of history.

Focusing on the images of the 6 seasons from Spring/Summer 1999 to Autumn/Winter 2001-2002 collections, photographer Max Vadukul produces images out of collage from selected photos. The 8 images featured in this capsule collection are brand new images made by Vadukul and the creative director, Claudio Dell'Olio.

Selected from the photos of the original shoot, they’ve been re-composed in black and white, revealing the strength of Max Vadukul’s emblematic black and white photography. They look like they've just been shot. Spontaneous images of people's lives, where Y's clothes just exist alongside them. Presented in such a nonchalant, yet impressive and powerful way. The vividly depicted images have not aged a bit, still testifying about the strength of Y's and the people wearing it.

In 1983, before Vadukul was brought in by the art director Marc Ascoli, Vadukul didn't even have an agent. He shot the Autumn/Winter 1984-85 collection in New York. Black and white pictures of “the clothing out on the streets, invading the city”. Later, by then staff photographer for The New Yorker magazine, he was asked to shoot Y's Spring/Summer 1999 collection and went on creating the images for 6 consecutive seasons. The new project is a creative collaboration that results of mutual respect and profound relations between Max Vadukul and Y's/Yohji Yamamoto.

The expressions of Y's shot in different cities – Feminine, masculine, various ethnic backgrounds, all different faces. The photos of all the people wearing the clothing, from different ages and genders, in different environments are surely reflecting versatility/diversity and universality in the images.

Vadukul's photographs brilliantly cut out the existence of clothing in everyday life. The natural and unpredictable scene of people and clothing's everyday seems to be the one and only vision for Y's.

What does Fashion insinuate? Something gets expressed in the “everyday clothing”, a positive attitude brings a new perspective. Versatility/diversity and universality.

The image of “everyday clothing” that preserves the urban lifestyle and people’s sense of daily life.

The initial sensitivity remains untarnished, gets re-composed and draws out some new clothes.
