A timeless classic finished in striking British Racing Green is ideal for the summer.

The MG Midget was produced between 1961 and 1979, this example is the last of the MkIII's, with the larger 1,275cc engine also found in the Mini Cooper S at the same time. The engine was detuned to 65BHP, and given a compression ratio of 8.8:1 for fears it would have been much faster than MG's range-topping and more expensive MGB. The MG Midget MkIII gained a separate master cylinder for the clutch, and a permanently attached hood with an improved mechanism making it much easier to use.

We like the look of this late MkIII MG Midget, restored and resprayed in British Racing Green in the mid 90s and rocking chrome bumpers.

I've always wanted a classic car, it hasn't quite been what I need for a daily driver though!

Melisa has only had this MG Midget for a few months, purchased with the sole intention to use as a daily car for her short commute to work. The practicalities of a classic of this age, and the slightly damp weather we've had this summer has meant Melisa hasn't quite gelled with this car the way she initially intended to.

The cars been put through a fresh service in her ownership, along with some electrical niggles being rectified, and she's now looking to find the car a new home.

Exterior

The desirable round-arch and chrome bumpers on the MkIII make it stand out from the crowd.

Wheels and Tyres

We like the look of the Rostyle steel wheels fitted on this Midget, they appear in really good condition.

The rubber also matches the condition of the wheels, in great condition with plenty of tread. All 4 Kleber tyres were fitted in 2012.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this MG Midget looks generally good, when getting close to the bonnet we noticed a few small dents present, and a few small stone chip marks which have caused some slight paint cracking.

Melisa reports the doors open and close with ease. The sills look in good condition, we did notice some minor surface rust beginning to show around the wheel arches which would benefit from some light attention.

Paint

The car was resprayed in British Racing Green in 1993 (originally white) and looks in great condition throughout. Each panel has even coverage and colour throughout. There are some very minor stone chips on the bonnet which have caused some paint cracking.

Glass and Trim

The chrome trim along the sides of the car appears in good condition.

Interior

A classic roadster interior, black vinyl and a simple and easy to read instrument cluster.

Seats and Carpets

The seats look really good in this MG Midget MKIII example, clean throughout with very few signs of wear, the bolsters show a few creases but overall a well looked-after interior.

The carpets and door cards tell a similar story, clean and tidy throughout the cabin.

Dashboard

A highly original MG dash can be found within this Midget, it's in line with its age and mileage.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Italian-inspired steering wheel is wrapped in wood and presents in the condition in line with the age and mileage. The gear stick tells a similar story overall great condition, ready to be used and enjoyed.

Mechanics

Excellent handling combined with an exciting new 1275cc 65BHP engine block.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by the BMC Austin A-series 1,275cc engine, also found in the Mini Cooper S. The detuned engine would output 65BHP and would offer a 0-60mph time in 11.6 seconds with a top speed of 95mph.

The car had a new gearbox fitted in 1994, along with a fresh service recently and whole host of engine work as detailed in the invoices.

Melisa captured a cold start video both inside the car and from the engine bay, the car ticking over without issue. Watch the mechanical video to see the car out on the road as well.

Suspension and Brakes

The car had improved rear suspension, with the quarter-elliptic leaf springs being replaced with semi-elliptic ones, to improve the lateral location of the rear axle and hence improve the car's tendency to oversteer.

The Drive

Bought with the intention to use as her daily car, Melisa has not found this little Midget to be quite what she expected. It certainly has all the classic looks and appeal she wanted, but practicalities of a modern car for the daily commute mean this is coming up for sale.

Electrics and Other

Melisa reports all the electrics are working on the car to her knowledge, the car is fitted with an aftermarket Pioneer tape player and radio.

Finished in a popular colour, and being a desirable round-arch and chrome bumper example, this MG Midget MkIII is a great usable classic.
