Are wood pallets safe to use indoors?
If you picked up a free wood pallet from the side of the road or the outside of a dumpster, do your best to ensure that the wood is clean, free of oil-based or other stains, and has not been treated with harmful chemicals. Look for an International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) stamp on the surface of the pallet, which is required on those coming from outside the U.S. Choose pallets stamped HT (heat-treated using steam or dry kiln heat) or DH (dielectric heated using microwaves or radio frequencies). Avoid using pallets that are marked with MB (Methyl Bromide) or SF (Sulfuryl Fluoride), both of which leave behind chemicals you don't want in your furniture.
-
What are the downsides of pallet furniture?
In addition to the risk of exposing yourself to harmful chemicals from pallets that have been treated with them, look out for any protruding nails, screws, or sharp edges when working with a wood pallet. Sand any newly acquired pallets to minimize the chance of splinters.
-
What should be used to finish wood pallet furniture?
Wood pallets can be painted or stained with a water- or oil-based stain as desired, and then sealed with wax or a clear coat of lacquer or varnish. Some people choose to keep wood pallets unsealed for a raw and rustic look on indoor furniture or décor, but sealing wood pallets will make them water-resistant, which is particularly helpful if you plan to use them outdoors.
