Description

Using the song lyrics from "Funhouse" by Pink, this lesson is a great way to teach poetry and figurative language while keeping the students engaged. Students will get to read and annotate the song lyrics while identifying figurative language terms. The figurative language terms are identified using SHAMPOO+II's. The annotations are made using a chart included in the answer key. Watch the music video either before or after annotations, teacher choice! I prefer to read over the lyrics with the students, give them about 15 minute to annotate and identify terms, then watch the video as a class. I then give them some time after the video to work on questions, then we discuss as a class.

This particular song comes with questions on vocabulary, the five senses, inference, figurative language, and a RACE question. There is also a bonus question that asks the students to do a short creative writing piece.
