“All You Wanted” by Michelle Branch

As explained by Michelle Branch, what the meaning of this song (“All You Wanted”) breaks down to, most simply put, is the universal desire for unconditional love. And the way certain lyrics read that would be particularly, we can postulate, in a romantic context. However, the way the songstress goes about illustrating said need is a bit unconventional and creative.

As opposed to initially coming off as someone who lacks such love herself (as to be expected) rather that title would go to the addressee, her loved one. The addressee is depicted as someone who, for simplicity’s sake, let’s say is not as open as the vocalist herself. So what Michelle proceeds to do is reach out to him. But in the process she also gets sucked into his “cold” world, so to speak.

So by the time the second verse rolls around, Branch also finds herself emotionally lacking, needing the addressee to rather prevent her from falling into a deep depression. So perhaps the implication in that regard, as noted earlier, is something like we all need somebody to lean on.

Are we dealing with a Romantic Relationship here?

In reality, there isn’t anything in the lyrics to specify that the featured relationship is romantic. But that’s the general impression one gets from the song.

But more simply explained, it’s as if the addressee is one of those people who amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life is in fact lonely on the inside. And the vocalist, as someone who loves this individual, feels as if she’s in a position to help him overcome this loneliness. Such a belief is based on the fact that her affection is genuine, on top of the singer perceiving that what the addressee really yearns for is “somebody who cares”. But as strongly insinuated throughout, her intervention proving effective is predicated on the addressee’s willingness to allow Michelle into his heart.
