Family: Cactaceae (Cactus Family)
Native to: Pacific coast of S. Ca and Baja, including southern Channel Islands; sandy, rugged, steep
coastal bluffs and nearby coastal scrubland hillsides, located within the coastal fog zone.

Shrubby cactus with many ascending cylindrical stems.
Densely covered with golden spines. A
very attractive cactus for coastal areas.
Growth characteristics:
Blooms in spring (Apr-Jun). Flowers are pale yellow, about 2” across, produced
over a month or so. Very unique and showy in bloom. Fruits rounded, ripening to red in late
summer. Fruits are loved by birds and small mammals – also make a nice jelly, sauce.

Uses in the garden: Mostly used in cactus gardens. Make a showy accent plant. Would do fine in a
large pot or planter.
Locate away from paths due to sharp spines.
This plant is rare in the wild.
Sensible substitute for: Similar non-native cacti (Bergerocactus & Cereus species).
Attracts: Excellent nectar source for bees, hummingbirds.
Provides fruit and seeds for birds.

Well-drained sandy soils or rocky are best; will tolerate other well-drained soils.

Relatively easy to grow in proper setting. Weeding is a challenge with all cacti.
