Module1:-Solidworks-Introduction, Interface
And Sketching
1.Getting Started:
In this topic, there were instructions about how to go through the
modules and tests and about downloading certificate. In this topic the
benefits of solid works was introduced.
2.Download The solid works software:
If you don't have access to SolidWorks, you can follow one of those
options to get access to the software:
1.If you are a student at a University that deals with SolidWorks,
you can approach your University IT department if they can
help you get access to the software.
2.You can request an evaluation version through the following
link https://www.solidworks.com/how-to-buy/get-education-
trial. Keep in mind that you will need to fill out your
information to get both your serial numbers and download file.
Below are instructions to request this student evaluation version.
For more information, the video after this chapter shows more
details about this trial version.
3.If you are a student and interested in purchasing the software,
you can follow the following link
https://www.solidworks.com/how-to-buy.
3.Interface and navigation:
It consists of
• Command Bar
• Canvas
• Design Tree
• SolidWorks Measurement System
• Adjusting the Default Measurement System
• Utilizing Mouse in SolidWorks
In this Section, I came to know about the command bar canvas and
design tree.
In command bar there are all commands which are required to sketch,
make 3D Model, etc.
Canvas is an infinite space where we can see the preview of model and
sketch
Design tree makes account of all the commands used for sketching and
modelling.
4.SolidWorks Sketching:
This section tells about creation of 2D sketches in solid works which
is a first step of making 3D model. Sketching Includes basic
commands like lines, circles, rectangles, arcs, polygons, etc. This also
includes 2D sketch editing commands like Trim, mirror, patterns,
fillet, etc.
In this topic, I learnt how to sketch a 2D drawing with the specified
dimension and constraints by applying relations like parallel,
perpendicular, coincident, equal, etc. to make 3D model. Sometimes
according to the command chosen and the position on cursor in canvas
the relations get applied automatically.
Module 2: Appling Features and material
1. 3D modeling Features:
This Section of 3D modelling Features contains:
1. Extrude Boss/Cut
2. Swept boss/ Cut
3. Revolve Boss/ Cut
4. Lofted Boss/ Cut
In this section of module, I learnt about the various 3D modelling
commands in which most important and strong command that is
Extrude boss/base and other commands like revolve and extruded
cut. By using these commands I came to know about how to convert
2D sketches into objects/ models.
Revolve boss
Extruded cut
Swept boss
2. Editing Commands:
There are various editing commands for 3D Model. The Basic
commands are:
1. Fillets
2. Chamfer
3. Selected Contours
By using the editing commands we can make fillets and chamfers
at edges and vertices which help to reduce the effect of stress
concentration in design. And also minimizes the sharp edges
which can harm the operator of that model after making that
model in daily life.
Fillet
Chamfer
3. Applying Materials and analyzing the physical
properties of Model:
1.Appling Materials To the Part:
In this topic, I got the knowledge about applying the required
material to the part. This option is present in design tree named
as “Material <not specified>” if not applied.
2.Analysing Properties:
The properties of part like its CG, Density, volume and mass
Can be obtained by clicking mass properties button in evaluate
Tab.
Module 3: SolidWorks Assembly
1. Opening assembly file:
The assembly file can be opened in two ways:
a) From a Part file
b)New from nothing
a) From a part:
If the part is already opened, the assembly file can be opened by
clicking on new dropdown menu and then by clicking on “Make
assembly from part” option.
b)New From Nothing
If there is nothing opened, the assembly file can be created by
following procedure:
New => Assembly => Ok the file
will be opened.
NOTE: The first part inserted will be fixed and can’t be moved
which is supposed to be based part of assembly by software itself.
2. Assembling the Parts:
I came to know that the various parts which are browsed from already
created part can be assembled with the help of mates. There are many
types of mates which are as follows:
a) Standard mates:
i. Coincident ii. Parallel
iii. Perpendicular iv. Tangent
v. Concentric vi. Distance
vii. Angle
3. Reference geometries:
Co-ordinate systems: After a completion of assembling the 3D model
if we want to find CG of assembled model with respect to any other
user defined co-ordinates can be find by adding new co-ordinate
system wherever on the object.
Module 4: Solidworks drawing and portfolio
Building
1.Opening Drawing file:
The Drawing file can be opened in two ways:
a) From a Part/Assembly file
b)New from nothing
a) From a part/Assembly:
If the part/assembly is already opened, the drawing file can be opened
by clicking on new dropdown menu and then by clicking on “Make
drawing from part/Assembly” option.
b)New From Nothing:
If there is nothing opened, the Drawing file can be created by
following procedure:
New => Drawing => Ok The
File will be opened.
2. Drawing views, adjusting scale, dimensions
and annotation
If the file is opened from scratch then we have to insert the part or
assembly of which we want to draw the different views. For inserting
the views just have to select the view from drawing view windrow
which we want and insert it on drawing sheet wherever required. For
Another views we just have to move the cursor in the respective
direction to get the views.
I also came to know about how to scale the drawing and dimensioning
it.
3.Design Portfolio:
Here I dug up the knowledge about Designing Portfolio, from this I
came to know that, A Design Portfolio is a selection of work cases
that you put together to proof our expertise, skills, and passion in a
specific subject.‟ the main purpose of a design portfolio is to attract
wanted attention towards yourself”.
Elements of Portfolio:
a) Title page: Attracts attention in a positive way. It can also
contain information like your name or a title for the portfolio
b)Table of contents: A table of contents would make it easier for
the reader to navigate through
c) Personal Information: It is the information for the reader to
know more about you.
d)Introduction/abstract Statement of originality: It includes the
message you are trying to deliver by displaying your projects.
 Module 5: Final Project
As final project of the training Air Piston assembly was made. The
assembly and parts are as shown below:
2. Parts description
1. Base 2. Main Body
3. Bolt 4. Big bolt
5. Connecting Bolt 6. Small Rod
7. Cylinder 8. Flywheel
9. Holder 10. Piston
11. Shaft Wheel
Assingments
Conclusion:
Solid works helps in the Designing, manufacturing analysing the properties
Of model. It also saves time by helping user to draft more quickly by rapidly
Accessible commands. Any complex Model can be easily created with the
Help of this software. Unlike to manual drawing of sheets any change in the
Part can be made even after completing the whole model. This change also
Reflects in all related file for example if any change in a part file is made it
Will also reflect in the corresponding assembly file and drawing too which
Is most beneficial and saves lots of time. It also helps students to understand
Any assembly quickly.

  • 6. Module1:-Solidworks-Introduction, Interface And Sketching 1.Getting Started: In this topic, there were instructions about how to go through the modules and tests and about downloading certificate. In this topic the benefits of solid works was introduced. 2.Download The solid works software: If you don't have access to SolidWorks, you can follow one of those options to get access to the software: 1.If you are a student at a University that deals with SolidWorks, you can approach your University IT department if they can help you get access to the software. 2.You can request an evaluation version through the following link https://www.solidworks.com/how-to-buy/get-education- trial. Keep in mind that you will need to fill out your information to get both your serial numbers and download file. Below are instructions to request this student evaluation version. For more information, the video after this chapter shows more details about this trial version.
  • 7. 3.If you are a student and interested in purchasing the software, you can follow the following link https://www.solidworks.com/how-to-buy.
  • 8. 3.Interface and navigation: It consists of • Command Bar • Canvas • Design Tree • SolidWorks Measurement System • Adjusting the Default Measurement System • Utilizing Mouse in SolidWorks In this Section, I came to know about the command bar canvas and design tree. In command bar there are all commands which are required to sketch, make 3D Model, etc. Canvas is an infinite space where we can see the preview of model and sketch Design tree makes account of all the commands used for sketching and modelling.
  • 9. 4.SolidWorks Sketching: This section tells about creation of 2D sketches in solid works which is a first step of making 3D model. Sketching Includes basic commands like lines, circles, rectangles, arcs, polygons, etc. This also includes 2D sketch editing commands like Trim, mirror, patterns, fillet, etc. In this topic, I learnt how to sketch a 2D drawing with the specified dimension and constraints by applying relations like parallel, perpendicular, coincident, equal, etc. to make 3D model. Sometimes according to the command chosen and the position on cursor in canvas the relations get applied automatically.
  • 10. Module 2: Appling Features and material 1. 3D modeling Features: This Section of 3D modelling Features contains: 1. Extrude Boss/Cut 2. Swept boss/ Cut 3. Revolve Boss/ Cut 4. Lofted Boss/ Cut In this section of module, I learnt about the various 3D modelling commands in which most important and strong command that is Extrude boss/base and other commands like revolve and extruded cut. By using these commands I came to know about how to convert 2D sketches into objects/ models.
  • 12. 2. Editing Commands: There are various editing commands for 3D Model. The Basic commands are: 1. Fillets 2. Chamfer 3. Selected Contours By using the editing commands we can make fillets and chamfers at edges and vertices which help to reduce the effect of stress concentration in design. And also minimizes the sharp edges which can harm the operator of that model after making that model in daily life. Fillet
  • 14. 3. Applying Materials and analyzing the physical properties of Model: 1.Appling Materials To the Part: In this topic, I got the knowledge about applying the required material to the part. This option is present in design tree named as “Material <not specified>” if not applied.
  • 15. 2.Analysing Properties: The properties of part like its CG, Density, volume and mass Can be obtained by clicking mass properties button in evaluate Tab.
  • 16. Module 3: SolidWorks Assembly 1. Opening assembly file: The assembly file can be opened in two ways: a) From a Part file b)New from nothing a) From a part: If the part is already opened, the assembly file can be opened by clicking on new dropdown menu and then by clicking on “Make assembly from part” option.
  • 17. b)New From Nothing If there is nothing opened, the assembly file can be created by following procedure: New => Assembly => Ok the file will be opened. NOTE: The first part inserted will be fixed and can’t be moved which is supposed to be based part of assembly by software itself.
  • 18. 2. Assembling the Parts: I came to know that the various parts which are browsed from already created part can be assembled with the help of mates. There are many types of mates which are as follows: a) Standard mates: i. Coincident ii. Parallel iii. Perpendicular iv. Tangent v. Concentric vi. Distance vii. Angle
  • 19. 3. Reference geometries: Co-ordinate systems: After a completion of assembling the 3D model if we want to find CG of assembled model with respect to any other user defined co-ordinates can be find by adding new co-ordinate system wherever on the object.
  • 20. Module 4: Solidworks drawing and portfolio Building 1.Opening Drawing file: The Drawing file can be opened in two ways: a) From a Part/Assembly file b)New from nothing a) From a part/Assembly: If the part/assembly is already opened, the drawing file can be opened by clicking on new dropdown menu and then by clicking on “Make drawing from part/Assembly” option.
  • 21. b)New From Nothing: If there is nothing opened, the Drawing file can be created by following procedure: New => Drawing => Ok The File will be opened.
  • 22. 2. Drawing views, adjusting scale, dimensions and annotation If the file is opened from scratch then we have to insert the part or assembly of which we want to draw the different views. For inserting the views just have to select the view from drawing view windrow which we want and insert it on drawing sheet wherever required. For Another views we just have to move the cursor in the respective direction to get the views. I also came to know about how to scale the drawing and dimensioning it.
  • 23. 3.Design Portfolio: Here I dug up the knowledge about Designing Portfolio, from this I came to know that, A Design Portfolio is a selection of work cases that you put together to proof our expertise, skills, and passion in a specific subject.‟ the main purpose of a design portfolio is to attract wanted attention towards yourself”. Elements of Portfolio: a) Title page: Attracts attention in a positive way. It can also contain information like your name or a title for the portfolio b)Table of contents: A table of contents would make it easier for the reader to navigate through c) Personal Information: It is the information for the reader to know more about you. d)Introduction/abstract Statement of originality: It includes the message you are trying to deliver by displaying your projects.
  • 24.  Module 5: Final Project As final project of the training Air Piston assembly was made. The assembly and parts are as shown below:
  • 25.
  • 26. 2. Parts description 1. Base 2. Main Body 3. Bolt 4. Big bolt
  • 27. 5. Connecting Bolt 6. Small Rod 7. Cylinder 8. Flywheel

  • 32. Conclusion: Solid works helps in the Designing, manufacturing analysing the properties Of model. It also saves time by helping user to draft more quickly by rapidly Accessible commands. Any complex Model can be easily created with the Help of this software. Unlike to manual drawing of sheets any change in the Part can be made even after completing the whole model. This change also Reflects in all related file for example if any change in a part file is made it Will also reflect in the corresponding assembly file and drawing too which Is most beneficial and saves lots of time. It also helps students to understand Any assembly quickly.
