Birmingham City are close to completing a deal to sign Rene Krhin from La Liga side Granada, according to Sky sources.
A fee has been agreed and the defensive midfielder is now in Birmingham to discuss personal terms and complete a medical.
The 26-year old Slovenia international was a target for Manchester City and Chelsea five years ago when he was at Inter Milan.
Birmingham officials are hopeful the deal can be completed by the end of the weekend.
Speaking about Krhin, manager Gianfranco Zola said: "He is a player we are very interested in. He is an international Slovenian, with good qualities that are good for us.
"We will see if it happens. It's a player that can add something to the team."
Meanwhile, discussions with West Brom continue over the future of midfielder Craig Gardner.
The Blues want to take Gardner back to St Andrew's on loan, with a view to a permanent deal, but manager Tony Pulis is not yet certain he will allow the life-long Birmingham fan to leave.
