© G00 G00 G d00GE Louis Jordan and the Tympany Five, 1946 Sax player Louis Jordan led one of the first rhythm ‘n’ blues bands that “crossed over” to be- come popular with white audiences as well as African-Americans. In 1939, after playing sax with Chick Webb's big band, Jordan formed his own smaller unit, the Tympany Five. During the World War II years they had a string of boogie-driven novelty hits, including “Caldonia,” “There Ain’t Nobody Here But Us Chickens,” “G.l. Jive,” and “Saturday Night Fish Fry.” Jordan was also in several musical films. Like Nat Cole's Trio, Jordan’s group was a bridge between swing and post-war R&B. Chuck Berry credits Tympany Five guitarist Carl Hogan (almost inaudible on Jordan’s recordings) as a chief inspiration, and a Broadway show was launched in the 1990s about Jordan called “Five Guys Named Moe.” The basic guitar backup lick throughout “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie” includes down- and up- strokes, as indicated by symbols in the measure below. Alternating between the F and F6 chords creates a relaxed shuffle-beat feel, which is strengthened by the muted chords. The song is essen- tially a three-chord, twelve-bar blues.
