Fireflies by Owl City

2. Paste the song lyrics into the box below:

"Fireflies"
You would not believe your eyes
If ten million fireflies
Lit up the world as I fell asleep
'Cause they'd fill the open air
And leave tear drops everywhere
You'd think me rude
But I would just stand and stare
I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems
'Cause I'd get a thousand hugs
From ten thousand lightning bugs
As they tried to teach me how to dance
A foxtrot above my head
A sock hop beneath my bed
The disco ball is just hanging by a thread
(Thread, thread...)
I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems
(When I fall asleep)
Leave my door open just a crack
(Please take me away from here)
'Cause I feel like such an insomniac
(Please take me away from here)
Why do I tire of counting sheep?
(Please take me away from here)
When I'm far too tired to fall asleep
(Ha-ha)
To ten million fireflies
I'm weird 'cause I hate goodbyes

I got misty eyes as they said farewell

(Said farewell)
But I'll know where several are
If my dreams get real bizarre
'Cause I saved a few and I keep them in a jar
(Jar, jar, jar...)
[2x]
I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems
(When I fall asleep)
I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep
Because my dreams are bursting at the seams

3. Highlight 5 examples of figurative language

above.

4. In the box below, explain why each of

those five examples is figurative language.
Use complete sentences.

Cause Id get a thousand hugs, is a hyperbole because he doesnt really get

a thousands hugs. It means that he loves hugs and the fireflies gave him many hugs.
As they tried to teach me how to dance, is a personification because the
fireflies cannot teach people how to dance. It means that the fireflies fly in the air as if
they are dancing.
I feel like an insomniac, is a simile because he is comparing himself to an
insomniac because he cannot sleep with the fireflies around. An insomniac is
someone who cant sleep.
A sock hop beneath my bed, is a personification because a sock cannot hop
beneath the bed. It is not a living object.
'Cause they'd fill the open air, is a personification and a hyperbole because
the fireflies cannot fill the air, it means that their are some much of them everywhere.
5. Underline diction in the song that helps you
understand the tone above.

6. Italicize diction in the song above that

helps you understand the mood.

7. In the box to the right, write a short

In the song Fireflies, by Owl City tone is
very lonely and dreamy like. An example of
paragraph describing the tone of the author
and its effect on the readers mood by quoting this when he sings, Lit up the world as I fell
asleep. This shows diction he uses makes
(and citing) examples.
the tone sound calm but dreamy at the same
time. Another example is, I'm weird 'cause I
hate goodbyes. I got misty eyes as they said
farewell. These two sentences gives out a

lonely tone. It seems like the speaker is

alone again because the fireflies are leaving.
The tone that the author uses affects the
readers mood as well. This lonely but
dreaming tone makes the reader feels very
imaginative and hopeful. I'd like to make
myself believe. That planet Earth turns
slowly. It's hard to say that I'd rather stay
awake when I'm asleep. 'Cause everything is
never as it seems. The diction that the
author uses in this chorus creates a different
feeling for the reader, like if we got
transported to a different, strange world. The
chorus leaves me feel calm. If my dreams
get real bizarre. 'Cause I saved a few and I
keep them in a jar. This quote creates an
imaginative mood. The tone is dreamy and
lonely, which makes the mood imaginative
and hopeful.
