Hear the 1975’s Atmospheric Cover of Sade’s ‘By Your Side’

British outfit share new charity single in support of War Child organization

The 1975 unveiled a delicate cover of Sade‘s 2000 track “By Your Side” as a charity single raising funds for the British organization, War Child. The charity provides aid to children in war-torn countries around the world.

“By Your Side” premiered on MistaJam’s BBC Radio 1 show (approximately 40 seconds into the audio clip) and finds the British outfit turning Sade‘s indelible acoustic pop into a luxurious soundscape of soft percussion and silky synthesizers. Singer Matthew Healey embraces the ultra-smooth vibes, filtering his soft croon through layers of effects while singing Sade’s intimate lyrics.

Speaking with MistaJam, Healey noted how Sade and “By Your Side” capture a style artists like Kanye West, Bon Iver and Chance the Rapper continue to emulate. “When I was listening to it, I was listening to it with a real sense of modernity and thinking, ‘Wow this is still really, really forward thinking.’ So me and George [Daniel] couldn’t help ourselves … It’s such a beautiful song.”

The 1975‘s cover of “By Your Side” marks the group’s first song since releasing their second LP, I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It, last year. The 1975 will embark on a North American tour in support of the record this spring, starting April 9th at the Pepsi Center in Mexico City.
