See Justin Moore Mock Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’

Country singer reads the rap song with a little sarcasm and a lot of Arkansas twang

Hip-hop mogul Drake‘s latest megahit “Hotline Bling” might be on the playlists of millions of people around the world – including a fair share of today’s country stars – but apparently Justin Moore is not one of them.

In a humorous video posted Tuesday by Phoenix radio station KNIX Country 102.5, the Arkansas native and singer of country-to-the-core hits like “Small Town USA” and “Lettin’ the Night Roll” does a reluctant reading of “Hotline Bling,” highlighting the song’s choppy, non-sensical lyrics and his own complete lack of rap game.

The good-natured clip quickly went viral (it has almost five million views so far), owing to the delightfully cringeworthy fact that Moore’s twang doesn’t gel with the song’s rhyme scheme at all, and that his flat reading of the lyrics only makes them sound more ridiculous.

He finally breaks out laughing after a deceiving line that at first sounds pretty dang country (it’s not, or is, depending on how you land on the weed question):

“I wonder if you’re rolling up a backwoods for someone else/Doing things I taught you, getting nasty for someone else,” he deadpans.

It’s both funny and exasperating from a country fan’s perspective, since many – but to be fair, not all – country songs would stand up pretty well to the same test. And after his crossover experiment comes to an end, Moore seems to agree.

“How much more money does this guy make than us?” he asks, mocking disbelief. “Are you kidding me?”

Moore’s latest single actually plays on country’s own longstanding penchant for wordplay, although in a much different way. It’s called “You Look Like I Need a Drink,” and just hit Billboard‘s country airplay chart this week.
