It’s impossible to fully understand the genius of an artist like Prince. He didn’t just transcend pop music and whatever genre radio tried to label him as, and he wasn’t just a savant who could play any instrument he picked up. The man was an honest to goodness genius when it came to writing music. One aspect of Prince's songwriting that tends to get overlooked is his lyrical content. On first listen, Prince's songs sound like they’re either about gettin’ down with a fine lady, or dancing until the sun comes up, but for each "Little Red Corvette" there was a sly philosophic undercurrent buried in another track. This list takes a look at the most meaningful Prince lyrics that can enrich your life.

Once you delve into Prince’s lyrical content you begin to realize he was a man who was not only aware of his place in the world of pop music, but someone who was concerned about what it meant to love someone - and to love yourself. Some of his more androgynous lyrics paint a picture of a person transcending heteronormative roles, all the while finding spirituality on the dance floor. Take a look at these Prince lyrics that inform how you live and think about how to make yourself just a little bit more Prince today than you were yesterday.

Vote up the most inspirational Prince lyrics, and if your favorite lines aren't already on the list, feel free to write them up for everyone in the comments. And if you love him, be sure to cast your vote in our list of the best Prince albums.

    I know times are changing
It's time we all reach out for something new

This is one of those great lyrics that remains prescient no matter how much time has passed since the song was released. Despite the ever changing world we live in, it never hurts to try to find something new.
  • Let's Go Crazy
    2

If you don't like the world you're living in
    Take a look around you
    A
    t least you got friends.

So much of "Let's Go Crazy" can be applied to one's life that it's hard to pick one set of lyrics. But if you've got nothing else, it's important to remember that there are people out there who care about you.
  • When Doves Cry
    3

    Maybe I'm just too demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father too bold

Nestled in this classic hit is the fear of becoming your parents, and repeating the mistakes of their past. If any song can help you steer yourself in another direction, it's this one.
  • When the day turns into the last day of all time
I can say I hope you are in these arms of mine

Admit it, if someone wrote that for you in a Valentine's Day card you would instantly melt. Take it from Prince, find the one person you want to be with and let them know.

    Tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999

As cliche as it might sound, there's nothing like the feeling of ~living in the now~ and acting like it might be your last night on Earth. The overwhelming positivity on this track is something that you can apply to anything from a night out to an evening cleaning your apartment.
  • I went to the doctor guess what he told me
He said girl you better try to have fun no matter what you do
    But he's a fool
    'Cause nothing compares to you

Sometimes you just want to be bummed out, and it's nice to have Prince to back you up on your plans for throwing a pity party for yourself.
  • Adore

    When we be making love
    I only hear the sounds
    Heavenly angels crying up above

To put it as PG as possible, the lyrics to "Adore" are truly an inspiration to focus on the person you love so you don't make them feel unwanted while you're uh... with them.

We don't let society tell us how it's supposed to be
Our clothes, our hair, we don't care
    It's all about being there

This might be the punkest lyric that Prince ever wrote, and it even works if you don't have out of the box looks. No matter who you are, you should be able to hold your head high while you walk down the street.
  • Love, it isn't love until it's past.

Ain't that the way it always is? Don't let this lyric foreshadow your romantic failings, use it to seize the day and recognize love while it's still in front of you.
  • I wanna be your brother
I wanna be your mother and your sister, too

One of the few expressions of the all encompassing love that we should all be so lucky to find in pop music. There's nothing wrong with the desire to be someone's everyone.

    Do I believe in god?
    Do I believe in me?

Leave it to Prince to ask the big questions while making you shake your tail feather. All self-reflection of the specific line aside, the song acts a great reminder that you don't need to be boring if you're a philosopher.
  • Pop Life

Tell me, what's the matter with your world
Was it a boy when U wanted a girl
Don't U know straight hair ain't got no curl?
    Life it ain't real funky
    Unless it's got that pop

For all of his metaphor-laden lyrics, "Pop Life" is pretty on the nose about life not being life unless it's a little bit of a bummer sometimes. Remember to do as Prince did and take the good with the bad.
  • Kiss

You don't have to be rich
    To be my girl
You don't have to be cool
    To rule my world.

There's no reason to be so specific when you're looking for someone to be with, romantic or platonic. When you boil it down, "Kiss" is about surrounding yourself with good people.
  • I Would Die 4 U
    14

    I would die for you
Darling if you want me to

    I would die for you

Wrapped in this metaphor-heavy song where Prince compares himself to God, is a message about giving your everything for a person - even if they hooked up with Morris Day.
  • Am I the weaker man
    Because I understand
That love must be the master plan?

It's not as in your face as when The Beatles sang "All you need is love," but it's the same sentiment. If you can be even half as beatific as Prince you should consider yourself lucky.
  • 'Cuz you and I know we gotta die some day
If you think I'm crazy, you're probably right
    B
ut I'm gonna have fun every motherf*ckin' night.

And even more aggressive party centric lyric than "1999," it's almost like Prince figured out how to make nihilism into a positive thing and turn himself into a pop version of Nietzche, but with less doom and gloom.

But I can take it, 'cause I want the whole nine
This ain't about the body, it's about the mind.

It's almost like Prince is telling everyone that the only way to achieve transcendence is by finding a mind to connect with, rather than just a slammin' bod.
  • I know
That you're goin' with another guy
    I don't care
'Cause I love you baby that's no lie
I love you more mine than I did when you were mine.

There's no bigger statement of love than continuing to care about someone even after they've bailed on you and left you for someone else. If you can let someone leave you without harboring ill will, you're a better person than probably 95% of the population.

    Do your dance
Why should you wait any longer?
    Take a chance
It could only make you stronger

Prince doesn't get enough credit for writing inspirational lyrics that continuously remind you to be you, no matter what's standing in your way.

I don't want to dance too hard, babe
    But this is a groove
I'm hot and I don't care who knows it
I got a job to do.

You know it. We know it. Prince definitely knew it. Sometimes you've just got to dance and there's nothing wrong with that.
  • Honey you got to slow down,
'Cause if you don't you gonna run your
Little red Corvette right in the ground

All double entendre aside, these are the perfect lyrics to remind yourself to stop pushing yourself so hard, and to take the night off from whatever it is that you're burning yourself out on.
