The dark pop hit "Space Oddity" by David Bowie might not be the most-fitting song to turn into a children's book. But graphic designer and illustrator Andrew Kolb doesn't see it that way.

The artist has taken the lyrics from Bowie's 1969 track and turned them into a fully illustrated eBook for the kiddos.

The song, about an astronaut who loses contact with Earth and ultimately gets lost in space, doesn't make for happy-ending bedtime reading for young children. But Kolb's illustrations are sure to appeal to both adults and kids with their vibrant colors and rich details.

Kold tells Wired.com that he tried to make the song work as a visual display. "It's been really cool hearing all these different interpretations of the lyrics, and all I can say is that the approach I took was the one that translated best to an image-based story."

Right now, the book is available as a free download on Kolb's Web site and the illustrator hopes to gain enough support to turn the project into a physical book.

Although you might want to shelter the kids from this story until they grow a little older, we're sure that there are plenty of adults who will enjoy this new take on Bowie's song.
