Fans didn’t expect Aerosmith’s Tyler to walk this way

Members of Aerosmith are, from left, bassist Tom Hamilton, rhythm guitarist Brad Whitford, vocalist Steven Tyler, drummer Joey Kramer, and lead guitarist Joe Perry.

The Marshfield Hills General Store is typical of its neighborhood: unpretentious, classic and surrounded by stars.

Steven Tyler, the Aerosmith frontman reportedly separating from the band, is one of them. He even keeps an envelope of cash at the store so that he doesn't have to bring his wallet if he drops by.

“It’s kind of sad. They used to be my favorite band in high school,” said Sandi Antonio, a Marshfield resident of 10 years, who was with her children Monday getting candy at the store.

Antonio said she was hearing of the potential split for the first time. It made her reminisce about the times she’d go see the band when she was growing up in Quincy.

Two of Tyler’s bandmates – drummer Joey Kramer and guitarist Brad Whitford – also have lived within walking distance of the store, which is owned by actor Steve Carell. But Tyler’s departure form the group was creating little or no chatter inside The General Store on Monday, according to a postal worker there. Two women at the counter said they had not heard the news.

“I was hoping that wasn't going to happen,” said one, who only gave her first name, Kathy. “I’m a big fan.”

Denial is a common sentiment among Aerosmith fans across the South Shore.

“Right now, I am choosing to believe it isn't true,” said Andrew White, a Quincy resident. “Aerosmith isn't Aerosmith without Steven.”

Still, others think discord and disharmony are part of rock ’n’ roll.

“I am sure he is just being a typical rock star and they will get back together soon,” said Catherine Milette, a Boston resident in Quincy Center on Monday.
