More interested in creating beauty than shaking booty, Brazil’s Marisa Monte has stayed true to her artistic ambitions and her love of tradition as she stayed atop the charts — a pop star who doesn’t act like a pop star.

More than 30 years after her first album, Monte, 55, will perform for the first time in New Jersey Friday night in Newark, where a large Brazilian population no doubt is excited for the Latin icon’s Garden State debut.
