Memorials may be made in the form of prayers or donations to the Juan de Borbon, 79, father of Spain's king PAMPLONA, Spain (AP) Juan de Borbon, father of King Juan Carlos I and longtime pretender to the Spanish throne during the Franco regime, died yesterday, the palace said. He was 79. Don Juan, as he was known in Spain, had suffered from throat cancer for five years. He had been hospitalized in the University of Navarra Clinic in Pamplona since September. His son, the king, was with Don Juan when he died, a hospital official said.

Don Juan will be buried next Wednesday in the 16th century El Escorial Monastery, the traditional resting place of Spanish royalty about 20 miles northwest of Madrid. His remains are to be flown today to Madrid, where he will lie in state at the Royal Palace for one day, said a spokesman for the royal family. Juan de Borbon set aside his aspirations to the Spanish throne in 1978 and acknowledged his son, Juan Carlos, as king. "I would like to have been king, but I renounced for the good of Spain," he later said. Juan Carlos became monarch two days after dictator Francisco Franco died in 1975.

The third son of King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia, granddaughter of Britain's Queen Victoria, Juan de Borbon was born in Segovia in 1913. He became heir to the Spanish throne at age 20 when his elder brothers, Alfonso, a hemophiliac, and Jaime, a deaf-mute, renounced their rights of succession in 1933.
