Elvis Presley is rightly called the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.  He is credited with 54 certified gold singles – more than any other recording artist ever!  This coin highlights one of those songs that sold at least 500,000 copies.

Mystic has permanently bonded a vibrant image of Elvis to this uncirculated US Half Dollar.  The coin features an original photograph of Presley from his estate’s official archives and is officially licensed by Elvis Presley Enterprises.

Good Rockin’ Tonight

The song “Good Rockin’ Tonight” was written and originally recorded by Roy Brown in 1947. It was one of the first songs to use “Rock” to describe a style of music. Brown’s version mentioned a number of popular African-American artists who had hit songs when this song was released. After the success of the song, rhythm and blues singer Wynonie Harris also made a recording of it, which became a #1 R&B hit.

Elvis recorded “Good Rockin’ Tonight” in 1954 for Sun Records. It became his second release, with “I Don’t Care if the Sun Don’t Shine” on the B-side. Presley’s version was close to Brown’s, but he removed the lyrics naming the artists, who were no longer popular. The lines were replaced with “We’re gonna rock, rock, rock!”

The reception for this song showed Presley was ahead of his time. The audience didn’t know how to react. The song didn’t have the country flavor of his previous hits, and older listeners weren’t ready to accept the new beat. Elvis performed “Good Rockin’ Tonight” during a live show broadcast in Houston. The DJ later noted the crowd “barely responded” to it. The new music style came to be known as rockabilly.  Eventually, over 500,000 copies of the song were sold and “Good Rockin’ Tonight was certified Gold.
