I, I, when you see it on the album it will say Leather and Lace, 1975
Written for Waylon Jennings and Jessie Cutler
Because Waylon Jennings called me and asked me to write a song called Leather and Lace
And I wrote the chorus, sent it back to him
And I was gonna quit, I wasn′t gonna write anymore
And he loved and he said, "Finish it"
This is when I was going out with Don Hanley
And Don did not like the idea of Leather and Lace really very much
So, I had to sort of say, "Well, I've got to write the song for Waylon
′Cause he really wants it, and I want to write a song for him
I've been waiting for ten years for somebody famous to ask me to write them a song
So, Don will come in every day and say "That′s terrible, start over"
So, he really helped me write the song even though he didn′t write it
He was the reason it isn't another song
Err, I guess Waylon and Jessie broke up right about at that time
So they never did the album that was gonna be called Leather and Lace
(So Don does the vocal?) So Don is singing it, yeah
But we have a demo that′s really good that he was singing on two and a sec
There was no way to do the song without him
It was either Waylon had to sing it or Waylon and Jessie had to sing it
Or Waylon and I had to sing it or it had to be done or not
It couldn't have been anyone else or it would have to go on the shelf
