Are we obsessed with ranking? From music to movies, unsolved mysteries to beautiful places on Earth, contemporary media enjoys inundating us with lists, usually aiming to definitively crown the "greatest" or "best": "The 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time", "The 50 Greatest Western Movies Ever Made", "The 100 Best Jazz Songs of the 20th Century"... the list goes on (pun?), interestingly repeatedly concentrating on topics associated with art, which in reality are subjective, hard to measure personal opinions. Unlike “Best Small SUVs” or “Australia’s Most Dangerous Snakes”. ”Arty” lists might offer inviting introductions for newbies wanting to open the door into the world of jazz, western films, or places to visit in France. But most of us (gladly!) dive into such debatable articles knowing up front that we will end up rolling our eyes while reading. We know what to expect: predictable picks, questionable omissions, and superficial understanding of the matter. Davie504’s video taking on WatchMojo’s list of top 10 bass players in the provided link is a perfect, entertaining example.
