At 67, with 4 successful exits and the experience of owning 7 radically different companies, I've learned a little bit about entrepreneurship. I'd like to share a lesson I've unfortunately had to learn a couple times. How to understand the difference between imminent failure and mere obstacles that you might consider stepping stones to future success in hindsight. 🔍 Throughout my journey, I’ve learned that obstacles often masquerade as impending doom. It’s crucial to never panic. The key to understanding lies in perspective and analysis. Both are difficult when you are in panic mode. Obstacles are Stepping Stones. They challenge your strategy and innovation. Each obstacle is a question, asking how you can evolve or pivot. You will never run a business that doesn’t present multiple obstacles. Overcoming those is obviously critical to your success or failure. But stepping stones are not the end of the road. Imminent Failure is a Dead End. While I’ve been fortunate to have a handful of successes, I’ve also had the misfortune of some bad failures. It’s those times that are the most difficult because there does come a time when failure is imminent and your obvious solutions have been exhausted and failed and the business can no longer survive in the current market or environment. Unfortunately, some businesses simply have no chance for success and the sooner you realize that the less painful the failure will be in the long run. 🚀 Every challenge is an opportunity to learn. When facing obstacles, ask yourself: What can this situation teach me? How can I adapt and improve? Is there a way to turn this into an advantage? Combine intuition with data. Your experience gives you a unique perspective, but it should be backed by market trends, customer feedback, and financial projections. Just because you think something doesn’t mean it’s true or you’re right. Real data seldom lies. Never hesitate to seek advice. Diverse viewpoints can provide clarity, helping distinguish between a hurdle and a dead end. These decisions can be made easier with good counsel you trust. Remember, even your failures will help you grow in the future. In fact, quite often, we learn the most from our failures because we so often take full credit for our successes, even though most successful companies and people are often very lucky. Sometimes we don't even know the real reasons we succeeded. 💡Remember, most successful ventures faced numerous obstacles. There are virtually NO overnight successes.
