GLENN MILLER BAND: RAY ANTHONY. Photograph inscribed and signed:
"To Bill/Very best/Ray Anthony". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 7¼x8¾ (one
surface). Captioned at lower margin. Beginning his career of over five decades
as a musician in his family's orchestra, Ray Anthony had his own band in
Cleveland, Ohio when he was discovered by the legendary Glenn Miller. At age
18, Anthony was playing first trumpet with the Glenn Miller Orchestra.
Anthony enlisted in the Navy during WWII and was put in charge of a service show
band that toured bases in the Pacific. As a result of his talent and
showmanship, the band won the award as best service band. After his discharge in
1946, Anthony formed the Ray Anthony Orchestra, which became a national
sensation. His song, "The Bunny Hop", started a new dance craze, and
Anthony shot to the top of the charts with his recordings of the themes from
Dragnet and Peter Gunn. The multi-talented Anthony also
starred in 15 films and hosted four television shows as well as appearing
as a regular on the Las Vegas club circuit. Another claim to fame was his
marriage to B-movie queen, Mamie Van Doren. Slightly creased at corners. Fine
condition.
