This week's New York Magazine includes a section devoted to the season's new "short shorts," including a $910 pair of booty-exposing striped Chanel hot pants. I have just one question--who the heck are these things made for, anyway?
Hot pants were all over the spring 2010 runways--Derek Lam, Missoni, Chanel, Prada, Stella McCartney--and itty bitty swaths of silk jacquard are masquerading as bottoms in stores all across New York City right now. But is anyone actually buying these things?
It seems the success trajectory of one's career as a pop star these days is directly reflective of how much leg she's willing to show on stage (see Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Ke$ha, and Katy Perry for proof--each and every one has recently bared most of her bottom in a leotard or a pair of hot pants), so there's your first audience.

But beyond the rump-shaking ladies of the radio, I have yet to find a.) An occasion that's appropriate, or b.) A woman with the guts to pull off this insanely tricky trend. You'd need buns of steel and a social calendar filled with rollerskating parties, go-go clubbing, and burlesque performances to even think about wearing these things out in public, right? Oh, and then you'd need an extra grand to blow on about 36 square inches of fabric, and the ability to brush off the cruel laughter of strangers. So, basically....Paris Hilton?
