The name of this genus, sometimes still considered a subgenus, literally means "dwarf candle", making reference to its small size, that makes it almost a miniature cactus, which with growth tends to cluster, rather than reach considerable heights. Native to the humid and foggy areas of the Peruvian coasts, it is highly appreciated for its perfectly symmetrical shapes and for its precise and ordered spines, but above all for its large typically nocturnal inflorescences, which will give you majestic and unique view, if you have patience to wait for the sunset! Here are some easy tips for its proper care and cultivation: This plant likes to be positioned where it can benefit of an exposure to full sun in rather airy locations. It prefers rather mild temperatures, however it is able to survive even at temperatures close to freezing, if the condition of a dry soil is respected. Water regularly but moderately in spring-summer, always making sure that the soil is completely dry between one watering and the next one. During the winter period, reduce watering to once every two months, avoiding stagnation of water, since it can cause rotting. The best soil is a well-draining and porous one, even better if further enriched with 50% or more of inert materials such as pumice, lapilli or clay. These are plants that do not need frequent fertilization, for that reason it will be sufficient to dilute a specific fertilizer with watering once a year, when deemed necessary.
