“A Bit of Good Luck” is an easy to knit shawl / wrap designed to be made with super bulky weight yarn.

This shawl is quick to knit on big needles and would make a lovely gift… to wish a friend or loved one “a bit of good luck”. I picked a green colorway since A Bit of Good Luck reminded me of Irish sayings such as these…

A best friend is like a four leaf clover; hard to find and lucky to have.

May your pockets be heavy and your heart be light, may good luck pursue you each morning and night.

As of February 2023, this pattern has a rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars on Ravelry for overall results and 5 out of 5 stars for clarity of instructions.

DIRECTIONS FOR THREE SHAWL SIZES:
Approximate sizes after blocking…

Small / Petite: 51” long x 13.5” wide (at widest point)
Medium: 55” long x 14” wide
Large: 59” long x 14.5” wide

The pattern includes details on how to increase the length of the shawl by adding rows in the middle (back) portion of the shawl. There’s also details on making the shawl wider and longer.

SKILL LEVEL: Easy

You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, increase stitches, decrease stitches, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.

Blocking of finished shawl is highly recommended.

ABBREVIATIONS:

M1L = make one stitch left leaning: Click here to see step-by-step tutorial.

K2tog = knit 2 stitches together

SUPER BULKY YARN:

Small / Petite: 200 - 210 yards
Medium: 225 - 240 yards
Large: 255 - 275 yards

I used Lion Brand Hometown in the color “Vermont Green” for the green shawl shown in the photos. Unfortunately, this colorway has been discontinued. However, the new ‘Ashland Pine’ colorway is very similar. The pattern will also work well with Lion Brand Thick & Quick. For more yarn ideas… see my blog post about super bulky yarns.

GAUGE:
Stockinette stitch with US size 15 needles: approximately 8.5 stitches & 12 rows = 4”

This pattern uses standard U.S. knitting terms.

Written pattern with row by row instructions.

I’m sorry but I am unable to assist with questions regarding how to adapt this pattern for lighter weight yarn. That would require writing a new pattern!

This is currently my go to shawl pattern for when I want something fun, easy and quick to knit. It is a good quick project that, for me, is easy to take with on the go whether to on a road trip for car knitting or out to dinner. I love it every time I make one it comes out so pretty.
