KRATER Achilles and the Amazons- Ancient Greek Gods Zeus along with Athena and Ares
In Ancient Greece, a krater or crater (κρατήρ in greek ) was a big vase used for mixing wine with water.
Kraters were placed in the center of the room at a Greek symposium. They were difficult to transport when fully loaded because they were fairly large. For that reason, other vessels, such as a Kyathos, an Amphora, or a Kylix, would be used to remove the wine and water mixture from the krater. As it is described in Homer's Odyssey, at a Greek feast, a steward was taking wine from a krater and pouring it into the guests' drinking cups. The current Greek word krasi (κρασί), which is used for unblended wine, derives from the ancient Greek word krasis (greek κράσις- meaning mixing) of wine with water in a krater vessel.
The interior of Kraters was glazed to make the clay surface more resistant to water and probably for aesthetic purposes, as the interior was visible. The exterior of a Krater generally was showing scenes from Ancient Greek daily life. In ancient Greece, drinking ákratos (in greek άκρατος- meaning undiluted) wine was regarded as a major mistake which was enough to consider a drinker as a drunkard who lacked principals and temperance.
There were four different forms of Kraters, the Column, the Calyx, the Bell and the Volute.
This Calyx form attic black-figure Krater is totally handmade, painted with two different ancient Greek representations and decorated with 24 gold carat flakes. The Calyx Kraters were the biggest of all the other types, reportedly created by the ancient greek potter Exekias in black-figure style, but actually most commonly are seen in red-figure style.
