Other than a Shrek bursting out of an outhouse in a swamp, Smash Mouth's "All Star" brings one thing to mind: energy. Play it at a party, and I guarantee at least half the people there will start singing it. Plus, it sounds so positive! You're an all-star, get your game on, go play, etc. Overall, kick some ass. Well, it turns out that the original version of "All Star" wasn't so upbeat.

Earlier today, the band's account tweeted the original handwritten "All Star" lyrics written by guitarist Greg Camp. However, as Spin pointed out, some of the lyrics were crossed out, including the last line of the chorus to make way for "and only shooting stars will break the mold."

The crossed-out line? "Wave bye bye to your soul." Well, shit.

As Spin's Andy Cush notes:

"That single line puts a darkly ironic twist on a song that otherwise seems pretty naive: sure, you can live only for fun, hit the ground running, take the backstreets, and set your world on fire–you'll shine, you'll glow, but you might lose the very thing that makes you human in the process."

Might have made the opening of Shrek a little different.
