The Monotones only had one big hit, but they were more talented than one hit might have you believe. They were talented songwriters, the songs are tightly produced and genuinely catchy. "What Would You Do If There Wasn't Any Rock n Roll" sounds like an anthem and another top ten hit, if it would have been released as a single. "You Never loved Me" is a ballad with a very strong memorable climactic ending. Though the Monotones don't have the reputation of the Flamingoes or the Cadillacs in the doo-wop genre, you could do worse than pick up these recordings. They are fine and very solid in their own right.

The Monotones were a great group. I bought this a few years ago, sold it a while later, and realized I really missed the music. Got a chance to get it again on eBay at reasonable price and took it. I'm so glad I did. This period of time was a very special one for Pop music... what I mean is that much of the Pop music of the day was very stylized. It had a distinctive flavor. The Monotones fit that description, in my opinion. The Monotones had a big hit in BOOK OF LOVE- a unique song with an exhilarating sound and unforgettable lyrics. It really stands out- whether you're listening to it on your stereo or hearing it on the radio. The music on this particular CD is Rock'n'roll, along with Pop, DooWop, and R&B. The Monotones had nice voices, and also put a lot of enthusiasm and energy into their music. A few of the songs really swing; and the whole record is a lot of fun. They certainly don't make music like this anymore; and that's kind of a shame.Read full review
