A Real Barn Burner
Delbert's superb album, "Everytime I Roll the Dice", is one of my all time favorites and one of Delbert's best. I first listened to it on a Halloween night in the early 90's while ferrying trick-or-treaters between houses. We didn't knock off early that night, as the music kept me amped up and having a great time while the munchkins ransacked the hood. Fifteen years later, the music still packs a punch and delivers the goods! You could hit the "repeat" button on "Everytime I Roll the Dice" and just enjoy listening to the rocking first track, but you'd definitely be short changing yourself. "I Used to Worry" is a soulful duet with Francine Reed that will put a smile on your face with its humorous look at life and bouncin' rhythm. The next four songs continue the roller coaster ride of lively, hard-hitting tunes mixed with good times music. "Stir It Up" has delightful shades of reggae before Delbert and Bonnie Raitt combine their impressive talents and close it out with their Grammy winning "Good Man, Good Woman". There's not a bad tune or lame track to be heard on the entire CD. All in all, this is a must-have album for any Delbert fan and a great introduction for listeners who appreciate good music but haven't heard of Delbert.

I first encountered the title track of this CD as it was "tossed-off" under the closing credits of some program on CMT, over a decade ago. I can't even recall the name of the show, now, and the "all-star, musical celebrities guest band" (playing in a distinctly "bluesier" style than the CD) only got about halfway through the second verse before the credits faded to black, but I was so impressed, I simply HAD to hunt-down that tune! The disc instantly became one of my favorites, both for listening and for "dialing-in" PA systems (I'm a live-sound engineer, among other things) until, one dark night, it was stolen from me - one of a zip-case full of two dozen such favorite “tuning-up” discs (some of them completely irreplaceable). One or two CDs I’d’ve bought right away, even at retail ... I first encountered the title track of this CD as it was "tossed-off" under the closing credits of some program on CMT, over a decade ago. (What a twit I am, sometimes!) Other discs will follow (Spyro Gyra, Little Feat, Schascle), but this was the FIRST one on my list! The credits read like a veritable “Who’s Who” across so many genres it’s almost ridiculous! From Melissa Etheridge to Tom Petty to Bonnie Raitt to Paul Shaffer and “The World’s Most Dangerous Band”, Delbert seems to be one of those artists who can ask virtually ANYONE to play with him, and I doubt he often hears the word, “No.” I get the definite impression that, during the Clinton administration, he could’ve called the White House and said, “Yo, Willy! Ya wanna blow horn on a track?”, and Marine One (the Presidential chopper) would’ve landed behind the studio before the phone finished disconnecting!

I love Delbert McClinton! I have quite a few CDs and have been to see him perform live many times. I had the windows down while playing this CD and a neighbor stopped me and asked who it was.......great music always!
