| Allmusic Biography : The Everly Brothers were not only among the most important and best early rock & roll stars, but also among the most influential rockers of any era. They set unmatched standards for close, two-part harmonies and infused early rock & roll with some of the best elements of country and pop music. Their legacy was and is felt enormously in all rock acts that employ harmonies as prime features, from the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel to legions of country-rockers as well as roots rockers like Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe (who once recorded an EP of Everlys songs together). Don (born February 1, 1937) and Phil (born January 19, 1939) were professionals way before their teens, schooled by their accomplished guitarist father Ike, and singing with their family on radio broadcasts in Iowa. In the mid-50s, they made a brief stab at conventional Nashville country with Columbia. When their single flopped, they were cast adrift for quite a while until they latched onto Cadence. Don invested their first single for the label, "Bye Bye Love," with a Bo Diddley beat that helped lift the song to number two in 1957. "Bye Bye Love" began a phenomenal three-year string of classic hit singles for Cadence, including "Wake Up Little Susie," "All I Have to Do Is Dream," "Bird Dog," "(Til) I Kissed You," and "When Will I Be Loved." The Everlys sang of young love with a heart-rending yearning and compelling melodies. The harmonies owed audible debts to Appalachian country music, but were imbued with a keen modern pop sensibility that made them more accessible without sacrificing any power or beauty. They were not as raw as the wild rockabilly men from Sun Records, but they could rock hard when they wanted. Even their midtempo numbers and ballads were executed with a force missing in the straight country and pop tunes of the era. The duo enjoyed a top-notch support team of producer Archie Bleyer, great Nashville session players like Chet Atkins, and the brilliant songwriting team of Boudleaux and Felice Bryant. Don, and occasionally Phil, wrote excellent songs of their own as well. In 1960, the Everlys left Cadence for a lucrative contract with the then-young Warner Bros. label (though its not often noted, the Everlys would do a lot to establish Warners as a major force in the record business). Its sometimes been written that the duo never recaptured the magic of their Cadence recordings, but actually Phil and Don peaked both commercially and artistically with their first Warners releases. "Cathys Clown," their first Warners single, was one of their greatest songs and a number one hit. Their first two Warners LPs, employing a fuller and brasher production than their Cadence work, were not just among their best work, but two of the best rock albums of the early 60s. The hits kept coming for a couple of years, some great ("Walk Right Back," "Temptation"), some displaying a distressing, increasing tendency toward soft pop and maudlin sentiments ("Ebony Eyes," "Thats Old Fashioned"). Don and Phils personal lives came under a lot of stress in the early 60s: they enlisted into the Marine Corps Reserves (together), and studied acting for six months but never made a motion picture. More seriously, Don developed an addiction to speed and almost died of an overdose in late 1962. By that time, their career as chart titans in the U.S. had ended; "Thats Old Fashioned" (1962) was their last Top Ten hit. Their albums became careless, erratic affairs, which was all the more frustrating because many of their flop singles of the time were fine, even near-classic efforts that demonstrated they could still deliver the goods. Virtually alone among first-generation rock & roll superstars, the Everlys stuck with no-nonsense rock & roll and remained determined to keep their sound contemporary, rather than drifting toward soft pop or country like so many others. Although their mid-60s recordings were largely ignored in America, they contained some of their finest work, including a ferocious Top 40 single in 1964 ("Gone, Gone, Gone"). They remained big stars overseas -- in 1965, "Price of Love" went to number two in the U.K. at the height of the British Invasion. They incorporated jangling Beatle/Byrdesque guitars into some of their songs and recorded a fine album with the Hollies (who were probably more blatantly influenced by the Everlys than any other British band of the time). In the late 60s, they helped pioneer country-rock with the 1968 album Roots, their most sophisticated and unified full-length statement. None of this revived their career as hitmakers, though they could always command huge audiences on international tours and hosted a network TV variety show in 1970. The decades of enforced professional togetherness finally took their toll on the pair in the early 70s, which saw a few dispirited albums and, finally, an acrimonious breakup in 1973. They spent the next decade performing solo, which only proved -- as is so often the case in close-knit artistic partnerships -- how much each brother needed the other to sound his best. In 1983, enough water had flowed under the bridge for the two to resume performing and recording together. The tours, with a backup band led by guitarist Albert Lee, proved they could still sing well. The records (both live and studio) were fair efforts that, in the final estimation, were not in nearly the same league as their 50s and 60s classics, although Paul McCartney penned a small hit single for them ("On the Wings of a Nightingale"). One of the more successful and dignified reunions in the rock annals, the Everlys continued to perform live, although they didnt release albums together after the late 80s. Phil Everly died on January 3, 2014 from complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; he was 74 years old. | ||

| Songs Our Daddy Taught Us : Allmusic album Review : The Everlys had reached their commercial peak when they made this album of sparsely arranged traditional songs, a concept that was quite a surprise from a top rock & roll act, and considerably ahead of its time. Its actually not as enduring as their early rockers and pop ballads, but the singing is superb on their interpretations of standards like "Barbara Allen" and "Kentucky." | ||

| The Everly Brothers' Best : Allmusic album Review : The Everly Brothers Cadence sides of the late 50s feature some of the duos best work. Shooting to stardom in their wake, the Brothers many Cadence highlights include "Bye Bye Love," "Wake Up Little Susie," "All I Have to Do Is Dream," "Problems," and "When Will I Be Loved." All of these were represented on the original 12-song LP, which also provided a heavy dose of Boudleaux and Felice Bryants incredible songs -- on top of a handful of classics authored by the Everlys themselves -- not to mention the chance to hear of some of the best Nashville players of the day. Maybe not as attractive as Rhinos Everly roundups (one features both the Cadence sides and their subsequent Warner Bros. hit), this original Cadence compilation still holds up nicely after almost half-a-century. | ||

| Both Sides of an Evening : Allmusic album Review : Both Sides of an Evening is usually cited as the place where the Everly Brothers music and career started to go wrong. Their relationship with their longtime producer and publisher, Wesley Rose, had fallen apart in late 1960 amid a conflict over copyrights, specifically their decision to record as a single an old Nacio Herb Brown/Arthur Freed song called "Temptation" that he didnt publish. Cut off from their regular source of songs, Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, who were Rose-published composers, were left to their own devices as songwriters, with the complication that they were also signed to Rose and there were now pending lawsuits in the relationship. Finding potential hits in such circumstances, much less a dozen good songs at a time to record, was a serious challenge. Their answer was an album consisting of rhythm numbers on side one ("For Dancing") and slow ballads ("For Dreaming") on side two. Most of the first side -- apart from the unfortunate decision to record "Mention My Name in Sheboygan" -- worked beautifully, their version of "Muskrat" even getting a kind of shimmering Bo Diddley-style "shave and a haircut" beat, and the duo even put a fresh (and unexpected rock) spin on the Al Jolson number "My Mammy." Side two is very soft for a rock & roll album and isnt helped by the presence of "Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo" and "Little Old Lady," though it is sung so beautifully that any of the groups teenaged fans that listened to it all the way through couldnt complain of the singing. In some ways, Both Sides of an Evening was the duos most ambitious and mature record to date, but it just wasnt terribly exciting or of much interest (especially the second side) to the teeenagers that made up the vast bulk of their audience. | ||

| Gone, Gone, Gone : Allmusic album Review : A jumble of tracks from varying sessions that, despite some excellent moments, were indicative of the general directionlessness of the Everlys career at this point. The title song was their final Top 40 single of the 60s, and indeed one of their greatest performances. "The Ferris Wheel," also a 1964 single, was a decent, moody ballad that was a minor hit in both America and the U.K; for some reason, it was excluded from the double-CD compilation of their best 60s work, Walk Right Back. Otherwise, the album contains a few other songs cut in 1964, and some odds and ends from sessions in the early 60s. The Everlys, John D. Loudermilk, and the great Boudleaux/Felice Bryant songwriting team wrote almost all of the material on this album, but unfortunately it was not up to the standards of either the writers or the performers. | ||

| The Very Best of The Everly Brothers : Allmusic album Review : There are few sounds in American popular music more thrilling and sublimely satisfying than the harmonies of Don and Phil Everly, the Everly Brothers, and this album features them singing a dozen great songs that have come to be associated with them. So whats the problem? Between 1957 and 1960, the Everly Brothers recorded for Cadence Records, where they enjoyed a run of hits with such songs as "Bye Bye Love," "Wake Up Little Susie," "All I Have to Do Is Dream," "Bird Dog," "Til I Kissed You," and "Devoted to You." In 1960, Don and Phil left Cadence for a more lucrative deal at Warner Bros. Records, where they continued to score hit records. However, when Warner Bros released The Very Best of the Everly Brothers in 1964, rather than focusing entirely on their post-60s hits or licensing the original Cadence recordings, the Everlys were sent into the studio to re-record the six early hits listed above. The new versions arent at all bad, and the arrangements follow the pattern of the originals closely, but the simple fact is you cant improve on perfection, and the re-cuts lack the magic of the originals. Just as importantly, the new versions lack a bit of the ineffable innocence of their Cadence sessions; after seven very busy years in the record business, "Bye Bye Love" simply didnt sound as simple or as sorrowful as it did when they still had a lot to learn about life. The six Warner Bros hits included in this album are, of course, presented in their original recordings, and "Cathys Clown," "Crying in the Rain" and "Walk Right Back" rank with the duos finest work, but when the cover says this represents The Very Best of the Everly Brothers, that description is only half right. | ||

| Rock 'n Soul : Allmusic album Review : Rockn Soul features a whole LP of oldies covers with guitar-heavy 60s arrangements, including such standards as "Thatll Be the Day," "Kansas City," "Hound Dog," "Lonely Weekends," "I Got a Woman," and the then-recent "Dancing in the Street." Its decently played and sung, but not among the Everlys most creative work, or even among their most interesting material of the mid-60s. Its also not quite as good as the similar album they would release later in 1965, Beat & Soul. The version of "Love Hurts," incidentally, is a different, more rock-oriented version than the ballad arrangement they had recorded a few years previously. | ||

| Two Yanks in England : Allmusic album Review : At first glance, this seems like a cash-in on the British Invasion. Recorded in London in 1966, no less than eight of the 12 songs were written by the Hollies (who released their own versions of many of the tunes). There are also covers of hits by the Spencer Davis Group and Manfred Mann. With a harder rock guitar sound (though not overdone or inappropriate) than previous Everlys discs, the duos interpretations are actually worth hearing in their own right. The harmonies are fabulous, and indeed, the Everlys improve a few of the Hollies songs substantially. "So Lonely" and "Hard Hard Year," in particular, have a lot more force, transforming the tunes from decent Hollies album tracks to excellence. Because so much of the material is non-original, this couldnt be placed in the top rank of Everly Brothers recordings. But it is a good effort that shows them, almost ten years after "Bye Bye Love," still at the top of their game and still heavily committed to a rock & roll sound. This was a bold contrast to other 50s white rock & rollers with roots in country, most of who had retreated to tamer country-oriented sounds by the mid-60s. | ||

| Roots : Allmusic album Review : Considered one of the finest early country-rock albums, this showed the Everlys, unlike virtually every other top rock & roll act of the 50s, keeping abreast of contemporary rock and pop trends. In the manner of their 1958 LP Songs Our Daddy Taught Us, the concept was to cover songs by performers and composers who had been influential on the duo (including Jimmie Rodgers and Merle Haggard), traditional standards, and a couple of numbers by Ron Elliott of the Beau Brummels. Although this laid-back, tasteful, acoustic-oriented recording isnt as outstanding as their classic early hits, the vocals are superb, conveying qualities of innocence tempered by experience. | ||

| Stories We Could Tell : Allmusic album Review : Stories We Could Tell is a slick album, produced by Paul Rothchild and featuring some of the top studio musicians in early-70s L.A. There are many top-drawer songs by songwriters such as Jesse Winchester, Kris Kristofferson, Rod Stewart, and John Sebastian. The Everlys do a fine job covering most of them. The Everly Brothers themselves, however, wrote the most remarkable songs on the disc. Don Everlys "Im Tired of Singing My Song in Las Vegas" voices the frustration of being trapped in endless gigs of singing the same oldies over and over again; its perhaps not surprising that the Everlys split at the end of 1973, the same year this album was recorded. The standout track is one that turned out to be one of the best songs in the Everly Brothers repertoire, "Green River." Its an irresistible confection of keyboards and guitar riffs of different varieties, including Ry Cooders superb bottleneck work and Buddy Emmons pedal steel. The lyrics are charmingly evocative of the brothers Kentucky childhood, and their harmony singing is superb. Stories We Could Tell is a fine country-rock album. | The New Album: Previously Unreleased Songs from the Early Sixties : Allmusic album Review : The Everly Brothers completed their contract with Warner Bros. Records in 1970, and they broke up in 1973. It is an interesting question, therefore, how the British division of Warner Bros. could have released an Everly Brothers LP pointedly called The New Album in 1977 (an album belatedly issued in the U.S. by the mail-order company Collectors Choice Music 28 years later in 2005). The answer, of course, is that the deceptively titled collection consists of tracks recorded by the Everlys for Warner Bros. in the 60s, all of them, with the exception of the 1968 B-side single "Empty Boxes," are previously unreleased. "Nancys Minuet" was also a B-side, but the version here is an alternate take, and Don Everly re-recorded "Omaha" for his 1970 solo album Don Everly. Otherwise, these are songs that never got out of the recording studio. They provide a short history in the Everlys work of the 60s, with the earlier tracks, such as the opening number, "Silent Treatment" and the closing one, "Why Not," both recorded in 1960, harking back to their classic 50s sound; mid-60s efforts like "Nothing Matters But You" and "Ill See Your Light" chasing the post-British Invasion trend; and 1968 recordings "Omaha" and "Empty Boxes" showing the reinvented acoustic style they would pursue on the Roots LP released at the end of that year. Songwriters include the Brill Building teams Gerry Goffin/Carole King and Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil, as well as Roger Miller, John D. Loudermilk, and the Everlys themselves, so the quality of the songs holds up, and its possible to imagine several of these tracks being hits in an alternate universe in which the Everly Brothers continued to be big recording stars after the early 60s. | ||

It wisely starts with 12 prime Cadence hits and then continues with 11 excellent Warner Brothers singles and album tracks before winding down with the John Sebastian-penned "Stories We Could Tell" (from their RCA period). Along the way, the budget-conscious, non-completist fan is treated to one essential classic after another, great sound, and superb, lengthy liner notes by Mitchell Cohen.
