Beach Boys record bosses are set to sue Katy Perry for nicking one of the band's most famous lyrics.

Katy's latest single is called California Gurls and features the line, "I wish they all could be California Girls," which first appeared in the Beach Boys hit of 1965.

Now the record label of the two surviving members of the band, Brian Wilson and Mike Love, have written to Katy's record company demanding a writing credit and a cut of the cash from her song.

A record industry source said: "Brian and Mike's record label, Rondor Music, have sent a letter to Katy's label, Capitol.

"It says Katy has cribbed one of the most famous lyrics in history."

The legendary line is sung by rapper Snoop Dogg at the end of Katy's track, which has sold more than three million copies.

A spokesman for Wilson said: "He likes Katy's record but doesn't know where the situation stands."

Katy's spokesman was unavailable for comment.
