Anton “Rolling Thunder” Nel remains SA’s heavyweight champ

NIGEL - Veteran national heavyweight boxing champion Anton Nel has done it again.

Anton successfully defended his title against the 39 year old Sithembile August in a bout at the RDG Festival of Boxing tournament at Presleys Night Club on February 25.

As anticipated, the far more experienced Nel sent August to the floor in the first round after one minute and 32 seconds. At the age of 47, Nel is now South Africa’s oldest ever boxing champ, but he plans to ‘hook’ at least another three defences of his national heavyweight title before retiring. He will defend his title once again against Osbourne Mashimana on May 28 at Carnival City in Brakpan.

In another bout at the RDG tournament, local heavyweight boxer Bevan Beckman took on Ntlakanipo Gwamando. Beckman also claimed victory when he knocked Gwamando out in the fourth round.

Anton and Bevan thanked their promoters and local supporters who attended the tournament at Presleys Night Club.
