Tell Me Who He Is

‘Tell Me Who He Is’ is an unreleased Paul McCartney song believed to have been written in the early 1960s.

It was discovered in a notebook in McCartney’s archive during the research period for his book The Lyrics: 1956 To The Present.

It was amazing to find this. It is my handwriting but I don’t know how it goes. It would have been a love ballad, rock thing. I would have probably had a tune to it. But you could not put things down. You didn’t have any recording devices so you had to remember them.

I barely remember this song. It’s probably early Sixties. But it may have started with me coming to John with an idea for a lyric. It’s as if there’s only a certain set of subjects. Love is one of them. Desire. Breakups. Revenge. That covers an awful lot of territory! So, I would have sat down with the idea of a girl having been unfaithful, or the suggestion she’s being unfaithful. It’s a terrifically fertile ground.
