4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 64 ratings

I know evil exists, I met it face to face Solomon Noche is a therapist in the seemingly normal small town of Retselville, Kentucky dealing with displaced anger toward God after his family dies tragically. Nightmares encapsulate him where an ancient demonic cult sacrifices children in Retselville. Despite Sol's protest, God chooses him to stop them. This discovery thrusts him into a journey where reality and psychosis blur as a nightmarish figure torments him with riddles and time-traveling horrors. The first riddle leads Sol to unearth a preacher's journal from the 1800's in a secret cellar in his yard. It details Elijah Darius' mission to stop the cult and his eyewitness account of a demon named Miyah and its demand of child sacrifices to the ancient god Dagon. The journal intertwines with Sol's life, and guides him to expose more secrets about Retselville, and the evil hidden history of the grounds where he works. As each riddle is solved, more horrors are uncovered including finding a sacrificial altar, a ritual dagger, and a well of children's skulls. The closer he gets to the truth, the more sinister the secrets become as he believes all of Retselville may be part of the cult and their centuries' old secrets. More than Sol's life hangs in the balance, as Miyah tempts him with unfathomable choices. But resolves his only hope is in repentance as only God can save him and defeat this demon and its' followers. Sol confronts Miyah in its appalling, fallen form a final time, in a battle beyond Retselville and Solomon Noche, but innumerable souls. Whisper A Scream is a supernatural thriller with demons, cults, and time-traveling nightmares. It becomes an intense thrill-ride of suspense, seizing you until the last page, with an addictive story that falls off the edge of horror. Dread seeps into your soul as you awaken to find yourself walking down the mysterious path with Sol and cower at the sights and sounds encountered. Pray your voice is heard as you WHISPER A SCREAM!

Most of the characters in this book are my family members. This book helped to remember where I came from and how I was raised, as I’ve unknowingly struggled with demons for many years but was blind to them .
I’m not exactly sure how to explain the events that happened in my life in the past 20 years, but ironically after reading this book, I believe the demon Miyah and his servants possessed me and other people that were connected to me due to it’s dislike of my grandfather.
I’m thankful God ,my friends ,and family guided me to see. Be careful when you’re weak, because that is when they got us!
God always wins - even when the battle takes many years - good always defeats evil!

If you enjoy novels that grapple with the concept of spiritual warfare, look no further than Pete Turner's debut novel, Whisper a Scream. WAS features therapist Solomon Noche, who finds himself over his head in wrestling with the demon Miyah and a cult of the ancient Philistine pagan fish-deity Dagon. Told from a first-person point of view, Turner does a good job of placing the reader inside Noche's mind...the journal entries that dot the plot also provide an additional personal touch to the struggles Christ's followers encounter in their never-ending battle against evil.

Can't wait for the sequel next year. Pete's "Taking Care of Business"!!

Whisper a Scream is a feather in the cap of the author considering it is not only his first book, but manages to combine both the horror and Christian genres into one tale. Once I got into this book it was very hard to put down. The tale keeps you riveted all the way through. I have recommended this book and have both the printed and Kindle edition. My printed copy is worn from it being shared and read by friends and they have come back with good reviews also. I have already purchased the Kindle edition of the second book in the series and am enjoying it thus far. Can't wait to finish that one and am already looking forward to the third. Wonderful job, Pete Turner!

"Whisper A Scream", kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Pete Turner has created a character that the reader can sympathize with, laugh with, and root for. Solomon captures your heart and takes you along with him on his terrifying adventure. I could not bring myself to put the book down, and wound up reading it within ten hours! I would, without hesitation, recommend this to anyone who is a fan of the horror genre. It quite literally keeps you wanting more of Solomon Noche, and his struggle not only with evil but his own faith as well.

I wish I could do two reviews of this book. I am reading the Kindle edition. The author clearly has talent. This story has great 'bones', but the editing is so bad that I cannot read more than a paragraph without being distracted by run-on sentences, missing words, and misused words. Did anybody proofread this? I feel bad for the author. He has the ability to paint a scene well, but he is in serious need of a new publisher.

I bought this book after reading all of the raving reviews, thinking I was going to be receiving a masterpiece like Ted Dekker's "Thr3e" or Frank Peretti's "This Present Darkness." What I actually received was no where near as good as these novels, but good for any author's first work. Here's the run down:

Good:
Turner can be very descriptive when he wants to be. Though he doesn't always use these skills, when he does, he can paint a picture. The story is fast-paced and there are some scenes of real tension. There are many scenes where the reader gets a sense of creepiness or eeriness, something which is sometimes rare in Christian thrillers. I liked the epilogue that explained why Turner wrote what he did and how he hopes it brings people close to Christ. One of the best things about this book is that you can actually see Turner developing as a writer. At the beginning of the book, he uses short choppy sentences and very vague and generic reactions for his characters. Near the end of the novel, though, he gives flowing ideas and descriptions that could contend with most authors.

Bad:
This is the single most poorly edited book I have ever read. I have no idea what Treasureline Publishing got paid for on this one. There are many words missing, inappropriate punctuation, and use of the wrong word. At first I tried not to let this bother me, but it's rampant throughout the whole book and it becomes distracting, especially when tension is building in the story and then you have to stop to try and figure out what word Turner meant instead of the one written or missing. At times I felt like Turner's favorite words were "WOW!" or "WHOA!" These are fine expressions but they were used so often and in every situation that it became annoying. For instance a deformed boy suddenly appears before Solomon, the main character, and his response is "WHOA!" Really? Not "My mouth instantly dried so much that my tongue was sticking to my teeth and I nearly lost control of my bladder." Just "WHOA!" As written above however, Turner gets better and more articulate about halfway through the book. Finally, though Turner is good at building tension, this novel lacked the subtlety of Dekker or Peretti, the subtlety that allows the reader time to wonder about what is lurking or what is making that awful sound. Turner instead uses a more matter of fact style, simply stating then this happened, and then this happened. This is an art that I'm sure comes with practice however, so it's not a huge concern.

Overall, I liked the book, but I would have enjoyed it more if I didn't have the hype of 5/5 stars and 55 reviews to raise my expectations. I would suggest this novel to anyone interested in Christian thrillers or horror but keep these 2 things in mind: this is Turner's first novel and most authors don't produce masterpieces on the first try, and remember that this novel has extremely poor editing. I think that Turner has a long future in Christian thrillers and I look forward to seeing him reach his potential, especially if he cuts ties with Treasureline Publishing.

It didn't take long for me to become completely drawn into the story of Solomon Noche that Pete Turner penned here in "Whisper A Scream"!! A truly addictive read from beginning to end!! So excited now to be reading the second installment, "Whisper From the Woods". Pete Turner has a true gift when it comes to getting across to the reader that good always conquers evil in the end!! This is a must read!! I have been a friend for many years, but now I am proud to openly declare myself a Pete Turner fan!!

This was one of the sickest books I think I ever read. Usually I donate my used books to the public library when I am done; this one was so horrible I just threw it out in the trash -- NOT recycling, but the dump. If I wanted to see The Saw Part 20 or Friday 13th Part Umpteen, I would watch them. I won't be reading any more of this guy's works. If I could give this a zero star I would.
