On October 3, 1901, the Victor Talking Machine Company was founded. The trademark, "His Masters Voice" with the Dog Nipper, was acquired at the same time. This was the beginning of what would eventually become RCA Records. The year 2001 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the RCA Records Label. In celebration of this event, the company is releasing the RCA 100 series featuring great artists from the world of Pop, Classics, Jazz, and Broadway. This particular purchase is one of RCA's 100 years of Music, a noble recognition on "The Very Best of Ed Ames". Ed Ames was born the youngest of nine children on July 9, 1927. His parents were Russian Jews who had emigrated from Ukraine and settled in Malden, a suburb of Boston, Massachusetts. Ed later recalled that he spent his childhood" suckled on poverty and love". I recall watching Ed Ames on the Tonight Show with a hatchet-throwing event whereby Ed Ames threw a real Hatchet at Johnny Carson standing in front of a marked wooden board with an outlined figure. I can actually recall that Ed said on the show prior to the Hatchet throwing that his skill level with the handling of the Hatchet had really progressed. This was a recognition of the success of the "Daniel Boone Series" with Ed Ames portraying an educated Native American named "Mingo" however Ed Ames went as it were over the top with the hit song "My Cup Runneth Over" .It was what prompted this purchase as "My Cup Runneth Over" is a wonderful song, its place has a place in my heart and in my life. Those whom I love qualified as knowing all those little things. It is to be sure a wonderful song which I have learned was originally sung in a Musical called "I Do, I Do". I have no reservation when success paints a portrait of what Joseph Laredo wrote "To sum it up quite simply, he remains one of the best singers in the world"

We first became acquainted with this man's smooth and beautiful baritone on the Time-Life Treasury of Christmas album. Being too young to remember hearing him first-hand, we bought this CD to sample more of his talent. It was a wonderful investment, full of gorgeous songs. Mr. Ames's forte is ballads, and this collection has some of the best ever written. There isn't a bad song in the bunch and the recording quality is excellent.
The first two songs are sung in a deep and dramatic way that is fine for their style. "Try To Remember" and "A Man And A Woman" are both done in this more theatrical mode, showing that Mr. Ames can really belt out his vocals. The rest of the tunes are rendered in a more natural way that really shows off his range and control to the best advantage. The album contains a nice variety of musical styles from slow ("Let Me So Love") to faster ("Apologize"), country ("Blue Side Of Lonesome") to spiritual ("Who Will Answer?"). Our personal favorites include "Time, Time", "Let Me So Love", "All My Love's Laughter", "Timeless Love" and the beautiful "My Cup Runneth Over". This last song is probably the finest version of the tune ever made, showing off Mr. Ames's vocal talents, especially his almost uncanny breath control and dynamics.
Mr. Ames was part of a singing quartet of brothers whose harmonies are now the stuff of legend; he had a successful career with them before forging off on his own. Unfortunately, singers like this just don't seem to happen anymore. If the listener wants to hear a rich and pure baritone, then this CD will nicely fill the bill. In this day and age of mediocrity, this is about as good as it gets.

Listening to Ed Ames's rich baritone makes me sort of shimmer. No other soloist can deliver the whole package the way Ed does: melody, lyrics, emotion, drama, passion, elation, introspection, reflection, When he sings, it's just him and me, and (sigh) I get ideas--you know what I mean. His rendering of "My Cup Runneth Over" brings tears to my eyes.

I love the CD! I recently saw Ed Ames on the Ed Sullivan Show (ME TV) and I love his easy listening, romantic style. I especially like "When the Snow is on the Roses" and I only wish I'd listened to him during his hey day instead of all the British groups that fascinated me in the 60's and 70's.

Not sure people ever fully appreciated what a great voice Ed Ames had. That said, this is a very mixed collection of songs, several of which I had never heard.

If you love music, you will enjoy listening to this collection. Ed Ames is one of the beautiful voices of easy listening from the twentieth century, and the songs themselves are good history from the period. From sweet love songs such as "My Cup Runneth Over" to the thought provoking "They Call the Wind Mariah," these are heart-liftingly beautiful. Even the song that deals with caring for the earth "Leave Them a Flower" leaves you glad that you heard it. The current technology for recording would produce a more brilliant sound than these original recordings, but part of the experience of listening to Ames is the knowledge that he has used his talent to work quietly for the appreciation and preservation of the earth.

CD recomendable.

In the U.K. this American singer was largely ignored during his heyday and when you listen to this compilation you wonder why. The selection includes all his U.S. best sellers and is great value and on reflection makes you wonder why the British record buying public never took to singers such as Ed or other such artistes as Vic Dana, Johnny Rivers or even Al Martino for example. It's time now to catch up now and see what you missed.
