Editorial Reviews
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, it wasn't unusual for the music from films and TV shows to make it into the charts. This excellent 32 track collection from Jasmine is testament to that as the first 30 titles all made the US charts and many also charted in the UK. Some of these melodies are almost timeless and have endured the test of time longer than the movies or shows they came from. You can remember "The Dark At The Top Of The Stairs" but do you know the movie? You'll certainly recognise "A Swingin' Safari" but do you have a clue about Match Game the TV show that used the theme? Features some of the biggest names in 50s easy listening music: Leroy Anderson, Mantovani, Ray Anthony, Billy Vaughn, Nelson Riddle, Lawrence Welk and more. Fully detailed liner notes.

However, a few errors too. These notes say 'On the Beach' was Frank Chacksfield's only US hit.
Wrong! Frank had two much bigger hits in 1953: Terry Theme from 'Limelight' which topped at No. 5
and Ebb Tide which hit No. 2 where it stayed for 4 weeks. Again 77 Sunset Strip was only released
as a single by Don Ralke. Bert Kaempfert's recording of his own composition 'Swingin' Safari' was never
released as a single in the US so Billy Vaughn's recording was not really a cover of a US Kaempfert
45. Bert had released his single earlier in Germany and it did not chart. When Billy Vaughn recorded
it and went as far as No. 11 in the US, it was released and also hit in Germany where it topped out at
No. 24 and charted for 16 weeks.
I was so enamored of the show, later on in life I traveled to Hollywood to see 77 Sunset Strip for myself. Alas, there is no such address in real life. And apparently there is no such authentic song from the show in real life as well.
Very disappointing.
