Editorial Reviews
The late 1950s and early 1960s were the 'golden era' for Rock & Roll Instrumentals and Sandy Nelson was by far the biggest drum star of the era. Already a well known session drummer by the time he was in his late teens, his first solo record "Teen Beat", became a million-selling worldwide hit in 1959. In 1961 he scored an even bigger international hit with "Let There Be Drums", which in turn span off a million-selling LP of the same title. On this compilation we also feature his first seven singles plus his first three LPs. Much of this material has been unavailable on CD for many years.

stereo in my car back then. Not the kind of thing that you play over and over , but a few of these mixed in with
other stuff is nice.
Born Sander Nelson in Santa Monica, California on December 1, 1938, he attended the same high school with such later musical stalwarts as Jan Berry, Dean Torrence (Jan & Dean), Phil Spector and Nancy Sinatra before joining the local band Kip Tyler & His Flips in 1958, and his drumming is evident in their 1958/59 non-charting (nationally) singles for Challenge and Ebb: She Got Eyes/Shadow Street (Challenge 1014) and Jungle Hop/Ooh Yeah, Baby (Challenge 59008), both in 1958, and She's My Witch/Rumble Rock (Ebb 154) and Oh Linda/Kali Lou (Ebb 156), both in 1959. In between he got his first taste of a hit record when he was brought in by Spector to play drums for The Teddy Bears' (a trio of which Spector was a member) October/November 1958 # 1 smash To Know Him, Is To Love Him on Doré 503. That same year he played drums for Gene Vincent & His Blue Caps for the sessions leading to the latter's Capitol album Crazy Times as well as on the single Geronimo/Charge by The Renegades (American Int'l 537), which did not chart nationally either.
He then capped off a busy year by finally getting a release of his own - the above-mentioned Teen Beat - for Los Angeles DJ Art Laboe's Original Sound Records, accompanied only by the menacing guitar riffs of Richard Polodor of The Renegades. That success led to a contract with the much larger Imperial Records, but owner Lew Chudd had to have been wondering if it was a mistake when his first 5 singles all failed to dent the Hot 100: Drum Party b/w his cover of the 1938 Bob Haggart & Ray Bauduc release for Decca, Big Noise From Winnetka (Imperial 5630 in 1959); Party Time/The Wiggle (Imperial 5648), Bouncy/Lost Dreams (Imperial 5672), and Cool Operator/Jive Talk (Imperial 5708), all in 1960, and in early 1961, Big Noise From The Jungle/Get With It (Imperial 5745). Everyone then breathed a huge sigh of relief when the above-mentioned Let There Be Drums got him back into the Top 10. All these sides are here with the usual excellent sound quality associated with Jasmine, along with informative liner notes. Tracks 15 to 26 in Disc 1 are from his 1960 Imperial LP 9105 "Sandy Nelson Plays Teen Beat" - tracks 1 to 12 in Disc 2 are from the 1961 Imperial LP 9136 "He's A Drummer Boy" - and tracks 13 to 21 in Disc 2 are from his 1961 Imperial LP 9159 "Let There Be Drums."
The rest of his released singles, which hopefully we will see at some future date in more such excellent Jasmine volumes, are shown in the Comments below.
