Editorial Reviews
Sale el Sol was recorded in the Bahamas, London, Barcelona, and the Dominican Republic. The title track, Sale el Sol was co-written with her friend and collaborator, Luis Fernando Ochoa. Shakira dedicated this song to her close friend Gustavo Cerati during the Rock in Rio show in Madrid in June, 2010. Shakira teamed up with El Cata, a famous Dominical reggaeton artist for the tracks Rabiosa and Loca con el Tigre , adding an urban edge (twist) to these up-tempo dance tracks. Gordita is a collaboration with René Pérez, frontman and contentious lyricist from Calle 13. In the track René admits that he liked Shakira more with dark hair and a bit heavier ( me gustabas cuando estabas mas gordita/con el pelito negrito/ y la cara redondita ) They performed the song together at Rock in Rio in Madrid, and the Glastonbury Music Festival in June of 2010. Mariposa is a ballad which features legendary guitarist , Gustavo Cerati, as well as the renowned pianist Alejandro Menéndez. Gustavo Cerati also plays guitar on the song Tu Boca . Sale el Sol reminds fans of Shakira s talent for writing songs that leave a mark on their generation with her inspired lyrics and unforgettable style.

Like Donde Estan Los Ladrones , SALE EL SOL covers lots of musical ground. I can't say I'm much of a reggaeton fan, but I must admit two of my favorites are Gordita and Rabiosa. Both are kind of obnoxious--but in a GOOD way! If my vote counts for anything, I'd like to see Devocion released as a single--it's "classic" Shakira. There's a LOT to like about this album! Lyrics included in the booklet.
As a note, be aware that the WAKA WAKA versions on this album are remixes and NOT the single/video versions which feature other female vocalists. So, if you're expecting what you've heard on the radio, this isn't it. Although living in the backwoods of the midwest, I hate to report that we don't get to hear Shakira on the radio at all--not even "Hips Don't Lie." So, I'm forced to get my Latin musical fixes off the TV music channels and internet radio feeds!
I give FIVE STARS to SALE EL SOL. I liked it from start to finish and can't even muster a petty gripe about it! In my opinion, as a complete album, it's the best Shakira album of the century--so far!
After the contrived electronic experimentation of She Wolf, Shakira went back to basics in what she has called the best record of her career. "I'm very excited about the new album," she told MTV News, "because it reminds me of different eras and stages of my career. It's like a synthesis of all these 20 years." Combining the festive music of Dominican Republic and Colombia with the edge of rock and pop she gives us a ride through a sonic range that reflects the two currents feeding this work: the melancholy ballads about heartbreak and the joyful, upbeat party tunes.
Unlike her previous records, Sale el sol is stripped from any pompous production, a characteristic noticeable from the opening title track that instantly transports the listener back to 1998. Lead single Loca features reggaeton artist El Cata and is the most contagious track of the album, if we do not consider World Cup Theme Waka Waka, included here in three different versions to the delight of all soccer fanatics.
Although her songwriting is not as vivid and inventive as it once was, no chance is wasted to explore her trademark florid rhyming and the rupture of lyrical structure into innuendos. Gordita, featuring potty-mouthed Calle 13 singer René Pérez, is a comical and flirtatious duet exchange that exploits the base track of El condor pasa and an irresistible accordion. Mariposas is undoubtedly a Gustavo Cerati song. He lends his guitar to create another pop gem that is sure to pulverize the airwaves. She nails an amazing cover of The xx's Islands, infusing it with new life and pumping beats, ready for the dance floor.
The counterpart comes with Antes de las seis, her most heartfelt composition since Antologia that in mere 2:57 minutes reduces the explosive stage potential of the whole record to the intimacy of a confessional, and Lo que mas, which continues her tradition of breathtaking ballads This is when she shines: beyond the movement of hips that don't lie and baritone vocals capable of choking ears, she bares a harrowing lament of lost love and devotion without giving in to sentimentality.
It is impossible not to compare Shakira's recent material with those early records from the mid nineties. The progression from local songstress into world phenomenon came, at times, with the sacrifice of a sound that some of her followers proclaimed as her essence. A quick listen of Sale el Sol results in the impression that it is nothing else than a collection of unknotted singles, but in paying it more attention one discovers that she has not abandoned her roots and has rather smartly incorporated them into a wider, more appealing product that blends cultures and unites idiosyncrasies.
With this new album, though, she is back to prove once again why she is the best. Her new songs show much of her latin yet rock-infused creations. You can hear a little bit of Pies Descalzos and Donde Estan Los Ladrones in some of these songs. There is an evident Dominican merengue influence as well.
I truly admire her voice and all she can do with it, but I wish she would work on her vocalization. I am originally from her same country, and I have a hard time understanding her lyrics in Spanish. My wife is American and she can't understand her lyrics in English. You pretty much have to follow the booklet to fully understand her lyrics regardless of the language, but nevertheless she is awesome on this new CD. Highly recommended.
