"Intuition" is the latest dance release from Britney, er... Jewel? It seems as if we have a new "Dance Diva" on our hands here! Following the club success of "Serve The Ego," Jewel gives us another dance offering that is sure to leave its predecessor looking pale by comparison. "Intuition" shows that Jewel has a good deal of flexibility in her writing. The vocal stylings would sound right at home on a Britney, Justin or N*Sync release. The mixes included here run the gamut from the obligitory Trance mix by Ford "The Trance Commander" to the urban sounding "Gabriel & Dresden Rhthym Club Mix" (which would be lost in the ubiquity of today's urban jungle). Gabriel and Dresden also contribute a nearly worthless dub to this release, which is only down-staged by the "Markus Schulz Coldharbor Mix," which is utterly useless. There are two gems on this collection of mixes, however. The first is "Todd Terry's In-House Mix," which furthers the evolution of House Music into a more Euronrg sounding hybrid. Yes, "Tee" is back, sounding just as great as he did on his mixes of Everything But The Girl, The Cardigans, 10,000 Maniacs etc... Mr Terry has again captured the spirit of the original by leaving its quirks and bubbliness intact and injecting it with a bouncing energetic euro beat. My favorite mix (and one of the best of the year 2003) is the "Gabriel and Dresden Hi-Tek Digital Mix." Think Planet Soul's "Set You Free" on a much grander scale. Do you remember the "Razor-N-Guido Club Mix" of "Mo Money, Mo Problems" by The Notorious BIG? This mix uses the same formula, but fortunately has much better original material to work with. It starts of with a frolicking, trance-inflected romp, only to slow it down a few BPM for the "meat" of the song, then cranks it back up again for a pulse-pounding climax, and wraps it all up very neatly with some spanky vocal efx to close. What makes this mix really work is that unlike G&D's "Rhythm Club Mix" (mentioned earlier), this remix never loses it's euphoric "club experience" feel, even during the slower BPM. The listener is given no opportunity to forget that this is a dance song, not just another mundane urban offering. This release should be for 2003 the crossover hit that "Turn Off The Light" (including the Dataluxe Remix) was for Nellie Furtado in 2001. If there is any justice in the world it will even eclipse that track in success, and hopefully (unlike Furtado) we will be dancing to new releases from Jewel for many, many years to come.

This is Jewel's second attempt at the dance market and it is also her second number one dance track. The song produced with Shakira's producer Lester Mendez finds the folk singer singing about trusting ones self to get by. "Intuition" comes in 8 mixes that go from awesome to good. The first remixer up is Todd Terry and in his usual fashion he houses up the song with a deep bassline and keys to boot. The In House Mix(5:41) and Tee's Freeze Mix(5:39) are straight ahead house vocal mixes. His Tee's Kat Mix(5:39) is a good dub. The second remixer up are the duo of Gabriel & Dresden who did a great job of mixing "Serve The Ego" last year. Their 1st mix is the Hi-Tek Digital Mix(10:50) that is not unlike those Junior Vasquez marathon mixes he did for Dolly Parton "Peace Train" and K.D. Lang "Theme from The Valley Of The Dolls" in which the music begins hard and fast only to drop out under the vocals to then pick up after the vocals are done. It worked for Junior and it does on this mix too. Their second mix -Rhythm Club Mix(8:17) takes out the beginning fast part and kicks in to the hip hop style beat of the other mix and then kicks up to the faster beat later. This mix would have worked better than to just keep the hip hop beat for the entire song- maybe just an extended original mix and that would be that. The Lo-Tek Analog Dub Mix(10:30) is upbeat house all the way. The next mixer is Markus Shulz's Coldharbor Mix(10:21) which is probably the mix most clubs are playing. Not that much vocals but an great mix . The final mixer is Ford and his Extended Mix(7:17) is my favorite mix here . Flat out trance this mix gives Jewel the drama that the other mixes don't have. All keys and loops work the song over the top . Just a beautiful mix. Well Done!!! So hopefully Atlantic will continue to release more remixes from Jewel because her growing club fans will want more.

Really: can a diva be humble? In Jewels case, yes. You can have spirit and confidence and still be humble. It's a wonderful philosophy that anyone could benefit from, and one that should be embraced. This new song, Intuition, is buzzing across the airwaves and into the dance clubs, with remixes so catchy, so deep, so inspiring that you'd have no idea it's Jewel. Or would you? The music is upbeat, the typical type of trance, techno and house music you'd hear in any club. But the lyrics, well that's a different story. 'Follow your heart, your intuition -- it will lead you in the right direction.' Those are, obviously, Jewel lyrics. Even so, the music and the words flow, creating this kind of hypnotizing mood that takes you on a ride. Every remix has a different style, but they all have one thing in common -- they are all incredible. Think of the 'Serve The Ego' remixes she did not too long ago, and add more flare, style and dramatism. What you have is something not only worth buying, but enjoying. She has collaborated with some of the best producers and mixers on the planet to create a remix single that truly makes its point without missing a beat. You can drive to this music (blasted up high of course), you can relax to this music (close your eyes and dream), or you can dance to it, whichever you'd prefer. With chords as luscious and beautiful as these, you'd think you were flying. Think of airy techno sounds, arpeggios and quick bass hits. Not to mention the soaring vocals. Jewel takes everything she has to offer and throws it at you with enthusiasm.
If you liked this remix single, I'd highly recommend either the 'Serve The Ego' single (it's not as strong as 'Intuition' but still has much to offer), Jewels new album '0304' (packed full of her best music so far), or TATUs single 'All The Things She Said' (particularly the one with the four remixes on it, it has some of the most enjoyable remixes of the day on it).
