Editorial Reviews
After Elvis, Pat Boone was by far the most popular and successful singer of the R&B era. This unique 2CD set features all his A&B sides between 1953-1960 and is the first time this body of work has been compiled on one set. Forty eight of these tracks were US hits, fifteen of which were million sellers and includes his No. 1s "Ain't That A Shame", "I'll Be Home", "I Almost Lost My Mind", "Don't Forbid Me", "Love Letters In The Sand" and "April Love". This is a real gem of a collection! Not only is it filled to the brim with hits but has a fair sprinkling of Pat's B-sides, many of which are rare and hard to find on CD!

All the songs are indeed "Original" as advertised, and there are 62 songs on 2 discs.
As a bonus the first 6 tracks are from Boone's early Republic Recordings (1953 & 1954), all the remaining are his Dot recordings produced by Randy Wood.
The first 30 tracks are monophonic just like the original 45's, then starting with April Love the mix changes to stereo.
There are a few of these tracks that are alternate versions: Wonderful Time Up There, and If Dreams Came True are not the same takes as the mono singles.
In these two cases they sound like the versions used in the stereo LP release from the same time period.
The same may be true of some of the other stereo cuts however they are all extremely close to the mono version.
A quality product to enjoy, if you want a crystal clear CD to compliment your old Boone disks buy this one.
When looking back at the Rockin' Fifties, most of these "experts" sloughed off Pat Boone as "an aberration" - someone who enjoyed considerable success only because those who bought his records, played him on the jukebox, and demanded to hear his tunes on the radio, simply did not understand what constituted Rock And Roll in the early days. And to that I give a rousing raspberry because no one can - or should even try for that matter - judge the music of 50-odd years ago by today's standards.
At that time R&R began its steady process of evolution with artists like Pat and Connie Francis every bit as adept at it as most at the time, albeit admittedly not in the class of Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, LaVern Baker, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly and Fats Domino. But then again, what it evolved into - e.g., organized (and often disorganized) noise from the likes of The Velvet Underground or Parliament/Funkadelic - can't be compared to those giants either,. And yet both are now ensconced in the same R&R Hall Of Fame. Different eras, vastly different approach.
Pat is also frequently vilified for having the "colossal nerve" to cover such tunes as Ain't That A Shame and Chains Of Love. But Fats Domino once stopped in the middle of that tune at a concert, walked to the front of the stage and showed the audience a huge, glittering, diamond-studded ring in the shape of a piano and said "I owe this to Pat Boone and the royalties I received from his version of Ain't That A Shame."
For the record, Pat had 60 Billboard Pop Top/Hot 100 hits from 1955 to 1969, four of which crossed over to the R&B charts, eight to the Adult Contemporary (AC) charts following their inception in 1961 (and added two more to those charts only), as well as putting five on the Country charts. Not bad for a "slug." And in this fantastic release you get his first three single releases for Republic Records in 1953/54 before joining Dot, followed by - all in chronological order - his first 48 Billboard Pop hits (20 of which were double-sided - a record matched at that time only by Elvis) as well as all 8 uncharted B-sides from 1955 to early 1961, with the backing orchestra on the vast majority of them being that of the great Billy Vaughn, musical director for the label.
For collectors of oldies hits they don't come any better than this. Just be aware that it does not go beyond The Exodus Song (for which he wrote the lyrics by the way), a # 64 in February 1961 b/w There's A Moon Out Tonight on Dot 16176. So, not included here would be the likes of the later 1961 # 1, Moody River, Big Cold Wind, Johnny Will, I'll See You In My Dreams, and Speedy Gonzales.
