Editorial Reviews

The early '50s was a heyday for vocal groups, riding the wave of middle-of-the-road popular music in the Tin Pan Alley-dominated years before rock 'n' roll changed pop music for ever. The Ames Brothers were one of the most popular of those groups, making their US chart debut in 1948, and racking up a lengthy string of hits over the next few years, including memorable No. 1s like "Rag Mop", "Sentimental Me" and "You, You, You". Their following was such that despite the upheaval that rock 'n' roll occasioned in the pop landscape, they continued having chart entries right through to the start of the new decade. This great-value 54-track 2-CD collection comprises all of the Billboard Top 100 entries they achieved during their career, including their UK Top 3 hit "Naughty Lady Of Shady Lane", plus all their Cash Box Top 40 entries which did not feature in Billboard, recording initially for Coral before moving to RCA in 1953. Apart from those mentioned above, it features classic big hits like "Music, Music Music", "Can Anyone Explain" "Undecided", "Tammy" and "Melodie D'Amour". It's an evocative and definitive souvenir of one of the most popular and successful groups of their era.

Would definitely recommend.

A child of the 1950s-60s, I discovered the Ames Brothers a few months ago, having missed them by a decade in my youth. I am in love with every selection in this collection and delight in not only the singing (which is perfection) but also the arrangements and orchestrations. The songs are romantic, seductive, rollicking, sentimental, wistful, and (on occasion) downright naughty. Whatever the tone, whatever the theme, songs sung by this quartet are winners. Only Ed Ames, the youngest brother, is still alive today. The others are making heaven even more heavenly. I treasure this purchase.

The harmonies of the Ames Brothers are just wonderful. It heartens back to a simpler time. Just good old vocal harmony at its best!
I wish they wrote songs like these today.....

The talented Ed Ames and his brothers were breaking up as a quartet when I was just a kid. In the sixties Ed Ames appeared alongside Fess Parker in the TV series Daniel Boone and then recommenced his sing career. I like this type of music while working or having long drives.

I play this cd on my cd player and enjoy it very much.

This is a great set of The Ames Brothers music. However, one of the songs that I really wanted from this was Little Serenade, which on this CD (CD2, Track 23) runs at about 3:00 minutes. The single from the original 45 (RCA 47-7268) that is supposed to be on the CD runs at about 2:45 minutes. As you might expect the version on this CD along and the pitch is way off. I was able to rip it into Sony Sonic Forge and fix it but I shouldn't have to do that, and of course it's not fixed on the CD. I haven't found any similar problems with other songs on the CDs but I don't have all of them on vinyl to compare them against as I do Little Serenade.

Both CD's skipped ALL the way through. It was purchased as a Christmas gift for my MIL. She recently came here for a visit so we played it for her just yesterday. We were very embarrassed. We didn't want to open the package before she arrived - it was a Christmas gift, but we know better now. We never had this happen so frequently on a CD. It's junk - we will toss it.

Nothing pretentious about these boys - these are straight-forward harmonising versions of good, honest songs.
Very pleasant listening in a relaxed mode. I enjoyed it.
