I first heard Jo Stafford's voice in the early 90s. And going back in time a bit, during the 80's, I have to consider to be one of the dryest period musically I've experienced since I wasn't able to find artists I wanted to hear. The introspective singer/songwriter period during the late 60s and the early 70's had all been phased out only to be replaced by disco dance music and punk rock. I felt abandoned and basically went back to listening to music from artists I've already come to know.

I first heard Jo Stafford on a Pasadena radio show featuring recordings from the Big Band Era and the music of the 50s in 1990. I was immediately taken aback; and her voice hit home with me. Her unique extended phrasing and the lovely lilt in her voice was perfectly expressed with backing arrangements that accompanied her voice beautifully, and which was basically the standard, on this, the G. I. Jo CD.

Before her singing career was launched, she received training to become an opera singer, but apparently it didn't work out quite the way she might have planned. But it is fortunate for us as listeners to hear that vocal training come to fruition on these popular songs of that era. These tracks are quality gems because the sound can never be repeated.

The only thing wrong with this CD is that I probably just received the last one Amazon will ever have in stock. Jo Stafford is not as well-remembered as many other '40's and 50's female singers are, but gosh, was she smooth. This short collection of ten World War II ballads about separated lovers is as good in its own way as Frank Sinatra's famous "In the Wee Small Hours" album of the mid-50's. My wife wanted a copy of Jo singing "I'll Walk Alone" which she had on a cassette along with other '40's songs. We found this, paid the price, and are quite happy with the product. I wonder if those couples undergoing separations due to tours in Afghanistan or Iraq, should they be exposed to these wonderful lyrics, would be able to relate? Have love and longing changed as much as marriage, cohabitation, having kids before the vows, having sex before the engagement, etc. changed in 60 years? Great album, this is. Short by today's standards, but powerful and lovely and near perfect. If you can find a copy and you like quality performances, these kind-of-sad songs will make you happy.

What a fantastic treat this collection is. I can only imagine the number of ladies who cried over this music as they waited for their men to come home from the war. I grew up on this music, it was one of my mom's favorite album, and, contains 2 of my top favorite songs: I'll Walk Alone, and, I'll Be Seeing You. I often become quite emotional when I hear these songs. After going through the various formats music has taken since the 50's, it never occurred to me that I would be able to find her on a CD until I started hearing her in various WWII movies. It seemed to make an Amazon search the next logical step, and, I was thrilled to find so much of her work this easy to find. I have been enjoying and reminiscing with her music since I purchased the CD, and, plan to expand my collection.

Dammit Jo...how could you leave us behind? You break my heart every time I play this CD. You told us "We Musn't Say Goodbye" and yet we do every time this song ends. You told us "I Don't Want to Walk Without You" and yet, those of us who are still around do have to walk without you, your artisty, your phrasing, and your perfect pitch. The saving grace? I hold onto "I'll Be Seeing You" knowing that I will be seeing you again the next time I press Play.

My wife and I got this, as it has songs both of us love, that we remember from our childhood. We plan to play some of them at her mothers funeral, which we are sad to say is coming soon, since she is in the care of Hospice at this moment. This actually is an album that came out long ago that we were surprised to see available, and met and exceeded our expectations. Thank you for a valuable service.

Jo Stafford is one of the great singers of the last century. I love hearing her interpretation of these WWII songs. Very moving.

Most of the songs were very slow tempo. There was only a couple songs I really liked. I am going to look for a different Jo Stafford CD. I really like Jo Stafford just not crazy about this CD.
