Shipped from afar, took a while to get here, but well worth the wait. This CD is different than the last. I do not think it is bad, in fact is very refreshing to see another style of work from them. I cannot wait for more from Midnight Juggernauts. I love this!

finally I have their new album!!
more "mature" than the first album,we fid more rock and less elettronica, but don't worry people,if you enloy the firstalbum, you MUST have the second!

Boy did it take some time for me to warm up to the latest Midnight Juggernauts album, but I'm glad I've made myself deal with it. Repeated listens reveal it to be a smoothly flowing, smoldering album with strong songwriting. While their debut, Dystopia, is about half good with the good songs being outright amazing, The Crystal Axis is good throughout, but with little in the way of standout tracks. Sure the dance power is gone, but there are plenty of other bands still doing that well if you need your fix. There aren't, however, a lot of bands making nightmarish new wave and prog flavored journeys into the psychedelic future. Astute listeners will hear ELO, Pink Floyd, and Billy Thorpe filtered through contemporary electropop. It's not perfect. Lyrics are nicked from the Bible and prayer, giving it a corny heaviness. Production is a bit flat. Aside from those minor complaints, the Crystal Axis is very worthwhile If you have the attention span and time.

NOOOOOOOO! This is nothing like Dystopia :-< and I listened twice. Do NOT buy this if you are expecting good Electronica.

There does not seem to be a genre that describes this album adequately. Midnight Juggernauts have evolved from a band making cleverly produced danceable electronica into something else, something that almost makes one want to take a deep breath and say "progressive". While most of the album is still danceable, these songs have a depth to them that repays repeated listening.

Moreover, this feels like a constructed album rather than a collection of songs. From the eerie opening notes of the opening instrumental "Induco" through the synth-pop of "Vital Signs" and "Lifeblood Flow", the frantic E.L.O.-sounding "Cannibal Freeway" and the pounding "Winds of Fortune", to the strange shimmering finale, "Fade To Red". this album has a cohesiveness. To call it a concept album would be a stretch, but the songs are linked by futuristic themes and electronic effects that would make it a great backdrop for a science fiction movie epic.

I instantly loved "Lifeblood Flow", one of the more "accessible" tracks with a chorus that has a seriously memorable hook. Some of the other tracks took me a bit longer to like, but they are worth the effort. "Lara Versus the Savage Pack" seems to plod along at first, but builds into an amazing instrumental climax that reminded me of nothing so much as ending of "Supper's Ready" by Gesesis. "Virago" has a slightly menacing African backbeat; "Dynasty" on the other hand is pure pop that would not sound out of place on a Bryan Ferry album.

The production is a bit flat and harsh in spots; also the vocals are not superb, the vocalist is no Freddie Mercury. I give it 4.6 stars, rounded up to 5.

I'm not much good at writing reviews, but feel I have to put in my two cents, just to counter the other unfairly harsh "review" here. "Crystal Axis" isn't "Dystopia", that's true, but it's hard to imagine not finding something to love on the new one if you loved the first. Much of the overt electro of Dystopia has been replaced with a lush, AM radio, 70's psych pop flavor. But, it's not like Dystopia was a 4/4 technoid, dance floor workout; there was a big Electric Light Orchestra influence going on.... and it's still there, just a bit subdued. And, even though there's a stronger pop/rock vibe going on, "Crystal Axis" is still coated with synths and electronic production. There's a large handful of perfect, beautiful pop moments on here, and though I've only been able to give it a couple of listens right now, it's by far one of my favorite albums of the year so far. Check out the new vids on youtube if you're worried.... and ignore the one-star review that's here.

....a GREAT followup to that unbelievable debut album.....some branching out with different rhythms and musical directions, but the addictive Juggernauts beat and hypnotic songwriting are a total joy from start to finish to replay...and replay......you really can't categorize their sound (everyone tries, check out the blogs) so whothehell cares, just jump on and blast off........keep it coming, guys, and you gotta do Chicago again on your next tour!!

1.0 out of 5 stars I love this band - but...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 14, 2013
I love this band and have seen them live where they were superb, but this album lacks any real 'moments'. Everything is a bit samey and nothing shines unlike previous albums. I've listened to it several times and just cannot find any really great songs. There are no growers.

It's going back on the shelf next to the dusty CDs...

Come on boys you can do so much better than this!

Nice cover though...
