Bill Haley - the man who brought rock 'n' roll into the mainstream. His song "Crazy Man, Crazy" was the first rock 'n' roll song to break the Billboard Top 20 in 1953 and was followed by his evergreen "We're Gonna Rock Around the Clock " the first song of its kind to hit #1. His success made him an idol not only in the US but throughout the world, from Canada to the UK, Europe, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and beyond. Yet Haley is often overlooked in the story of rock 'n' roll, overshadowed by others who followed him, from sex symbol Elvis Presley to wild man Jerry Lee Lewis and forever-young Buddy Holly. But Haley's lack of visibility was in part his own doing: he had conflicted feelings about fame, was extremely private, suffered chronic alcoholism, and troubled relationships with multiple wives, which yielded ten children who he struggled to support. Though he managed to carry on a successful touring career, his demons eventually eroded his health, and in 1981, at the age of only 55, he passed away. This book is written by esteemed biographer Peter Benjaminson and Bill Haley Jr., Haley's son, a musician himself, who tours the world paying tribute to his father's music. Culled from interviews with insiders - from ex-wives to the Comets, recorded conversations with Haley Sr., official documents, diaries, and more, this book not only charts the happenings of Haley's career but gives insight into the Haley behind the curtain and some of the other trials he faced, from the dark side of the music business to ties with Mafia. Featuring a collection of rare photographs, this book is a must-have for any serious rock 'n' roll fan.

Peter's latest book, THE LIFE AND TIMES OF BETTY BOOP: THE 100-YEAR HISTORY OF AN ANIMATED ICON, will be released by Applause Books on November 15, 2023, only four days before the only musical about Betty ever staged, BOOP: THE MUSICAL, will open at the CIBC Theatre in Chicago on its way to Broadway. THE LIFE AND TIMES OF BETTY BOOP is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com.

Peter's previous nine books include CRAZY MAN CRAZY: THE BILL HALEY STORY, which Peter co-wrote with Bill Haley Jr. and THE STORY OF MOTOWN, REVISED EDITION, with a foreword by nationally acclaimed rock critic Greil Marcus.

Also by Peter are SUPER FREAK: THE LIFE OF RICK JAMES, MARY WELLS: THE TUMULTUOUS LIFE OF MOTOWN'S FIRST SUPERSTAR, the only biography of Mary "My Guy" Wells ever published, which was greeted with an enthusiastic full-page review on the front page of the Entertainment Section of The Wall Street Journal, and THE LOST SUPREME: THE LIFE OF DREAMGIRL FLORENCE BALLARD. Both the Mary Wells bio and THE LOST SUPREME were based on Peter's exclusive hours-long one-on-one taped interviews with the subjects of each of those books.

Peter was born in Washington, D.C., and was a reporter for the DETROIT FREE PRESS from 1970-76. While at the Free Press, he wrote the book INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING, with David Anderson, the first how-to book in that field. It was in print for 20 years. From 1979 to 1981 he was a reporter for the ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION. In 1984, he wrote DEATH IN THE AFTERNOON: AMERICA'S NEWSPAPER GIANTS STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL, the first and only book about the death of afternoon newspapers in America's big cities, for which he received the Jim Andrews Communicator Award. Bill Haley’s career offers many life lessons. Among them, don’t give up. If you have a goal, make a plan and work it. Two, once successful, surround yourself with good people. Related, success only magnifies unsolved emotional issues.

Haley Jr (with Peter Benjaminson) provides a thorough telling of the Original King of Rock n Roll. For whatever reason, Haley Sn does not seem to get the respect he deserves from pop music historians. His knowledge of music and his level of musicianship are apparent in whatever source you read. However, his emergence, along with the Comets, came at a pivoting point in pop music. Their influences were big band, jazz, and swing artists. Their musical chops were far above those of emerging artists like Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Elvis, etc., yet, these were the types of artists breaking through the pop charts. Haley’s immediate challenge was finding relevant songs that would keep him on the charts. That – in my opinion – was his Achilles heel and the main cause for his slide off the charts.

Haley Sn seemed to ride cycles of highs and lows. Success would be followed by down turns. Poor management and/or creative choices would impact record and ticket sales. Perhaps related to business decisions, he made extreme and impetuous personal choices that effected his wives and children. If only he had had quality management instead of trying to steer the ship himself.

It’s all revealed in the book. Bill’s family life, including his wives and children, are included and discussed, as is the decline of his career, and his sad demise. The book is enhanced with many pictures, an informative bibliography, and a much appreciated discography.

Bill Haley had a goal to become successful in music. He devised a plan and worked it. However, once success was obtained, it was a challenge to deal with. As the saying goes, “Be careful what you ask for; you might just get it!”

Highly recommend this book. Also read, “Sound and Glory: the Incredible Story of Bill Haley, the Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” by John Haley, Bill’s oldest son.

Once I started reading it I was sucked in. This well-paced writing kept me interested by being very detailed expose of the life of Bill Haley and the industry surrounding the music business of the day. Heartbreaking at times as it is another story about how difficult it is to balance home life and celebrity. I was particularly impressed with the details of business dynamics presented and also the way that other artists of the day, including Elvis, were interleaved/paralleled into the story for historical orientation. One interesting corollary of the story which readers may not have previously come to grips with is that if Bill Haley was arguably the originator or certainly the first celebrated recorder/hit-maker of rock n roll, then Philadelphia PA has a stronger claim to being the birthplace of Rock n Roll than I have ever previously been presented with. Readers familiar to the Philadelphia area will appreciate the references to local areas like Chester, Valley Forge, Collegeville, Wildwood, and business establishments of the time.

Much information for fans of fifties rock. Had the good fortune to meet and interview Bill Haley as a radio dj in the 70's. Finished the book in two days.

Bill hall was before my time. Like most people, I knew him for "Rock Around the clock". but there's SO much more to the story.
I bought the book because I was familiar w the work of the co writer Peter Benjaminson, who has written, beautifully, books on Motown artist. From reading the notes, it appears that he was able to take the voluminous amount of work done by Bill Haley, jr, and turn it into this fine book.
Lots of sad stuff here; the hits, huge overseas successes (unknown to me), the financial ups and downs.

all in all, a fascinating story, even for someone unfamiliar with Bill Haley and his music.

I never knew some of the things that were in this book, Haley was my favorite while growing up, he made
the best decision when he went from country to Rock & Roll. Most articles about the beginning of Rock & Roll rarely mention Bill Haley & he was the original best to stir a crowd, I would recommend this book he died way too soon & he put on a great show.

Very well researched and full of insight into just how this music we call rock and roll came to be. Extremely readable!

I have been a Bill Haley Fan, nearly all my life. Born too late, to have seen Bill Haley & The Comets on stage. I have absorbed all books on Bill, be it the German language "Bill Haley" published by Bastei Luebbe in 1981, the John Swenson biography "The Daddy of Rock & Roll", the John W. Haley and John von Hoelle written "Sound & Glory", as well as "King Of Rock & Roll" by James F. Cullinan and Jim Dawson`s epic work on the impact "Rock Around The Clock" had. This led me to write two books on Bill Haley, available with Books On Demand, myself.
Several years after my publications on Bill Haley, I am now reading Peter Benjaminson`s and Bill Haley Jr.`s work on Bill Haley`s career and life - "Crazy Man Crazy". It is one of the great rock biographies you can`t lay down, which tells you in a very detailed, yet straight to the point, the rise, fall and comebacks of one of Rock & Roll`s founding fathers and the world`s first King of Rock & Roll - Bill Haley.
I particularly find it interesting to read about Bill Haley`s relationship to co-author Bill Haley Junior`s mother Joan Barbara Cupchak - Cuppy, and the challenges they had to face as a couple. There are also mentions of what was happening to Rock & Roll`s other stars of the time, Bill Haley was so famous in, be it Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry or Little Richard. Further very good assessments of the films Bill Haley appeared in, or films which featured his music. Love, life, music, fame and ultimately tragedy make up the life of William John Clifton Haley and this book on him. Thank you to the two authors, for once again, making myself being absorbed and fascinated with The Bill Haley Story, after having just submitted my third book, this one on Elvis Presley, for publication.

5.0 out of 5 stars L'uomo prima, dopo e durante Rock around The clock

5.0 out of 5 stars Rocky road to ruin
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 8, 2020
Bill Haley opened the door to rock ’n’ roll, but was flattened by the rush of performers who rampaged through it.

Haley had several problems. One was that he insisted on recording mostly material that he and members of the Comets had written themselves, so they could earn from the publishing rights. Much of the material was weak, and his sound never really evolved from its original country-rock-swing style.

Another was that Haley was already pushing thirty when he first found fame, and in a world that was looking for sexually charged young talent, was overweight, flabby, had an absurd kiss curl, and a right eye that tended to wander, due to a botched childhood operation.

He received hideously poor management advice. He made investments that were so disastrous it would have been comic were it not tragic. He neglected his wives and children. He spent money like crazy, man, crazy.

And then there was the alcohol. Earlier, a chaste cup of coffee with his evening meal had been the Haley style. But then on his first UK visit, someone introduced him to Johnny Walker Scotch whisky, and Haley was hooked.

His career, and life, ended in a haze of alcohol and debts. It is a sad story. Bill Haley Jr, who was in the unhappy position of seeing his father’s faults up close, tells the tale well, and for those of us who were (just about) there at the time, it is an absorbing read.
